FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Miami University men's basketball team could not overcome a hot shooting Fort Wayne on Saturday as the Mastodons took an 87-71 victory. The RedHawks fall to 4-4 as their two-game win streak came to an end. Fort Wayne improves to 7-2 on the year.
Junior forward Logan McLane and freshman forward Marcus Weathers led four `Hawks in double figures with 13 points each. However, the Mastodons went 12-for-20 (60.0 percent) from behind the three-point arc and 30-for-60 (50.0 percent) overall, leading to the victory.
Fort Wayne opened up a 12-2 lead to begin the contest, before freshman guard Michael Weathers hit back-to-back layups to get the Miami offense moving. He was fouled and converted the free throw on the second layup to complete the old-fashioned three-point play. Michael Weathers than found McLane down low for an easy layup that pulled the RedHawks to within six at 15-9 with 13:58 remaining in the period.
The Mastodons began to get hot from behind the arc as they built their lead to 30-15. Back-to-back layups from McLane and freshman center Bruno Solomun cut the deficit to 11, but Fort Wayne eventually pushed the advantage to 18 with 3:09 to go. A jumper from Michael Weathers with 1:25 remaining sent the Red and White into the break trailing 44-28.
Freshman center Darius Harper opened up the second half with a layup, but the Mastodons answered with a 16-8 run to build the lead to 60-38 with 14:26 remaining. Redshirt sophomore guard Jake Wright, freshman guard Milos Jovic and Michael Weathers each drained three-pointers as the RedHawks got as close as 17 points at 71-54 with 7:36 remaining. Fort Wayne pushed the lead back over 20 until Miami fought back with some late offense by Solomun and Marcus Weathers. It would not be enough though as the Mastodons finished off an 87-71 win.
Michael Weathers scored 12 points and had five assists, two blocks and a steal for the RedHawks. Wright had 10 and Solomun finished with six. Fort Wayne had a slight 41-39 advantage on the boards and was led by Bryson Scott with 24 points.
