OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami hockey team struck for a pair of power play goals, but Omaha's special teams shined a bit brighter as it topped MU 6-2 on Saturday night.
Omaha (6-3-1, 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey) scored three power play goals and added a shorthanded tally to send Miami (3-6-2, 0-4 NCHC) to its fifth-straight loss.
After giving up a couple power play goals in Friday's series opener, Miami yielded another man advantage goal on Omaha's first power play of the evening. A point shot ended up getting the puck to the stick of Teemu Pulkkinen, who then fed Mason Morelli at the back door to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead with 6:15 gone by.
The RedHawks went on their first power play just over 11 minutes in, but a defensive zone turnover created a 2-on-0 with the puck on David Pope's stick, who slipped it over to Austin Ortega for another back door goal, this a shorthanded tally to dig MU into a 2-0 hole.
Kiefer Sherwood then took charge as the Red and White went on two more power plays in the period. The sophomore cut the gap to 2-1 with 4:58 to go until intermission when an Anthony Louis shot was blocked and found him at the left circle, where he ripped a slap shot home. Jared Brandt also assisted on the play. Sherwood struck on the power play again with 3:08 left in the frame with a one-time bomb after playing a two-man game with Josh Melnick. Carter Johnson also drew an assist on the tally as Sherwood secured his first career multi-goal game. That left the score tied at 2-2 after 20 minutes.
Miami slightly outshot Omaha (10-9) in the second period as penalties again marred the flow of play with the teams combining for six minor penalties. 4-on-4 play led to the Mavericks regaining the lead as Luc Snuggerud snuck in from the left point and was fed in front, where he worked around Chase Munroe and scored at the 7:20 mark to make it a 3-2 game.
With the Red and White on a power play trying to find a tying tally, a penalty opened the ice at 4-on-4 again. Just as an Omaha power play was starting, Miami was called for another penalty to give UNO a 5-on-3. The two-man advantage struck for the Mavericks as David Pope one-timed a shot from beneath the right dot and in to up the lead to 4-2 following two periods of play.
The RedHawks poured on the pressure looking to get back into the game early in the third period and had a few sustained shifts in the offensive zone. At one point, Miami attempted six straight shots with Sherwood getting open in the slot for a wrist shot that clanged off the post in a bid for a hat trick. Omaha withstood the barrage and eventually Tristan Keck chipped the puck high and out of the zone to spring Ortega for a breakaway goal at the 4:48 mark to make it 5-2. Later on, the Mavericks got another two man advantage and while the RedHawks killed off the first penalty, Snuggerud picked the puck up at the Omaha blue line after a Miami clear and eventually skated in for a breakaway to score his second of the night and cap the scoring with 12:04 left.
Omaha ended up with a slim 26-25 shot advantage and scored on 3-of-8 power plays while Miami went 2-of-7 on the man advantage. Munroe stopped 20 shots in his first collegiate start while Weninger turned away 23 shots at the other end.
The RedHawks are on the road for their next four games, beginning with a league series at Denver that begins on Friday night at 9:30 p.m. ET.
