OXFORD, Ohio -- Despite two late goals from Longwood, the Miami University field hockey team controlled most of the contest as it hung on for a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon. The RedHawks improve to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference after their fifth straight win. The Lancers fall to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
Miami held a 22-6 lead in shots attempted with the majority of Longwood's attempts coming in the final five minutes. The Red and White were rewarded for their aggressiveness with a 13-3 advantage in penalty corner attempts, scoring on two of them.
The Lancers were the aggressors in the first five minutes, bringing the ball into the RedHawks attacking zone. Edel Nyland got off a strong scoring chance three minutes into the game, but her shot hit the post. Miami then took play to the other side for most of the remainder of the half, but despite 11 shots and seven penalty corner attempts, the game went into the break scoreless.
The RedHawks finally broke though in the 41st minute. Junior midfielder Henni Otten sent a pass in from about 30 yards out that found sophomore midfielder Estel Roig in the right corner of the circle. She was able to redirect it past the goalkeeper's right pad to put Miami on the board.
The Red and White made it 2-0 five minutes later on a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Carla Romagosa took a shot from the left side that sophomore midfielder Ashley Laskowitz tipped into the net.
In the 57th minute, Miami earned its 13th penalty corner of the match. Laskowitz would send it into to Otten, who did the stick stop. Junior back Mariona Heras then took the hard shot that beat Longwood's goalkeeper and made it 3-0.
The Lancers were able to get on the board in the 66th minute after Olivia Warzyniak got loose in the circle and shot it in. Longwood completed the scoring by successfully converting a penalty corner after time expired.
Heras led Miami with nine shots for the contest, while sophomore forward Paula Portugal recorded four.
The RedHawks return to action when they host Kent State next Friday for a key MAC contest beginning at 4:30 p.m.
