KENT, Ohio - The Miami University cross country program competed in the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday. The men, as predicted in the preseason polls, placed second in the 8K race with 63 team points. The women's team took 7th in the 6K with 145. Eastern Michigan clinched first place in the men's and women's races. The Eagles had just 15 points on the men's side while the women had 27.
Junior Matt Bromley paced the `Hawks, placing 10th individually with a time of 25:47.5. Just a step behind him was senior Andrew Dusing, who took 11th. The next three RedHawk scorers also finished in succession. Junior Jake Brumfield (25:50.9), freshman David Coffey (25:53.5), and junior Stephen Biebelhausen (25:58.4) finished 13th, 14th, and 15th, respectively.
Following the race, Coffey was named MAC Freshman of the Year. Based on their finishes, Bromley, Dusing, and Coffey were named Second-Team All-MAC.
Junior Maria Scavuzzo led the Miami women, finishing fifth with a time of 21:10.9. This marks her fifth race leading the `Hawks in the individual standings. Of her First-Team All-MAC performance, Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Tom Chorny said she "ran an excellent race against some of the top runners in our conference and ended up fifth overall." Chorny believes this was a great chance for Scavuzzo to prepare for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on November 11.
The next RedHawk, crossing at the 22:05.2 mark and taking 25th, was sophomore Maria Weisgerber. Senior Allison Klonne took 30th with a 22:17.9 clip. Freshman Carly Davis was the fourth place runner for the RedHawks, ending up 39th with a 22:42.9 time. Rounding out the Miami scorers was sophomore Alexis Szivan, whose time of 22:57.2 netted her 48th place.
"We have very big goals for both our men's and women's programs," said Chorny. "This was a great step in the process, showing us that we are on the right track."
The RedHawks will next run in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, November 11 in Madison, Wisconsin.
