OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University field hockey team ran into a strong offense on Sunday as third-ranked North Carolina downed the RedHawks, 6-0. Miami falls to 8-7 overall, while the Tar Heels improve to 12-3.
Miami's best chance to score in the first half came in the sixth minute when the Red and White pushed the ball in the circle drawing a foul and a penalty corner attempt. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Laskowitz sent in the pass to junior back Mariona Heras, who set it up for senior midfielder Carla Romagosa. She took a hard shot, but a Tar Heel defender was able to get in the way and block it before it reached the net.
North Carolina then answered with two goals, one coming in the 11th minute and a second in the 19th. The RedHawks defense was able to hold tight from there as the Tar Heels took a 2-0 lead into the break. North Carolina broke it open with two goals on penalty corners midway through the second half. After Miami received a yellow card with 10 minutes to go that forced it to play a player down the rest of the way, the Tar Heels put in two more to finish off the 6-0 win.
Romagosa got one last opportunity to get the `Hawks on the board with her penalty corner shot, but it was saved by the UNC goalkeeper in the 67th minute.
"We were outplayed by North Carolina today," said head coach Inako Puzo. "They won nearly every ball that was in play and we were always one or two seconds behind. They played fast and the scoreboard is probably a good reflection of what happened on the field."
North Carolina held a 16-3 advantage in shots and a 6-3 lead in penalty corner attempts. Romagosa led Miami with two shots, while senior goalkeeper Alysa Xavier made six saves in net.
The RedHawks return to action on Friday when they host Appalachian State at 4:30 p.m.
