RedHawks Fall to Zips, 75-46

AKRON, Ohio--Senior guard Geovonie McKnight scored 18 points to lead all scorers, but it was not enough as Miami University's men's basketball team (6-13; 0-6 Mid-American Conference) was defeated at Akron (15-4; 4-2 MAC) on Saturday night, 75-46.

The Zips were sharp from beyond the 3-point arc, knocking down 14-of-26 triples for the game.

Akron opened up an early 5-0 lead, but Miami countered with layups from senior guards Eric Washington and McKnight to close within one by the 15:29 mark. The Zips pushed their lead to 18-8 midway through the first half. Jumpers by McKnight and sophomore forward Rod Mills put the Red and White within six with just under seven minutes to go, 18-12. Another McKnight jumper at the 4:26 mark again put the RedHawks within six, 20-14. The Zips, however, closed the opening stanza outscoring Miami 14-4 to carry a 34-18 lead into the intermission.

McKnight paced the RedHawks in the first half with 10 points to lead all scorers, while Washington led all players with six boards. Miami edged Akron in field goal percentage 40.9 to 40.7, but the Zips shot 6-of-12 from 3-point range and were 6-of-6 from the free-throw line while the RedHawks did not connect on their seven 3-point attempts or two free-throws attempts.

McKnight scored the first four points of the second half to put Miami within 12 points with just over 18 minutes to go, 34-22. After Akron extended its lead to 16 points, a layup from sophomore guard Ali Barnes put Miami within 16 at the 14:49 mark, 38-24. Four 3-pointers by the Zips extended their lead to 52-28. The RedHawks then had a 6-0 spurt that included a dunk and a layup from sophomore guard Abdoulaye Harouna that left Miami trailing 52-34 with just over nine minutes to play but would get no closer.

Miami returns home to host Central Michigan at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Tuesday's game is the RedHawks' Military Appreciation game. Ticket prices for military members and their families is $8 per ticket with a military ID.
