OXFORD, Ohio - Saturday night proved a prime example of why you play to the final horn as Anthony Louis' goal with two seconds remaining lifted the Miami hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 16 Bowling Green.
Louis' goal capped the RedHawks' (7-11-3) five-game home stand and drops the Falcons to 13-7-5 on the season.
After a couple long distance shots were handled by Jay Williams, Miami countered with a great chance as Kiefer Sherwood hit Andrew Schmit with a pass up the seam to spring him for a breakaway, but Chris Nell turned that away two minutes in.
Play was relatively even over the first five minutes, then the Falcons got on the board on a long wrist shot by Kevin Dufour at the 5:55 mark. Miami got a power play chance near the midpoint of the period, but was unable to get a shot on goal during the scoreless two minutes. The Red and White got another power play at the end of the period, but again nothing came of it as Miami remained down a goal and was outshot 12-6 in the opening frame.
The RedHawks started showing some more life in the second period as Louis got free off a turnover, but Chris Nell stopped his shot from the left dot. After a media timeout, his line got another shift that started in the offensive zone with Josh Melnick throwing the puck into the middle and Alex Gacek getting a few cracks from point blank range that Nell kept from crossing the line.
Bowling Green went on its first power play with 5:43 gone by in the middle stanza, but Miami's penalty killing was up to the task and kept it a one-goal game. With the period wearing on, MU got another lift from the Louis, Gacek and Melnick line as Louis flung a puck through traffic to the net that Nell saved and Gacek crashed the goal and tapped in his fourth tally of the year to tie it 1-1 with 5:15 to go until intermission. Melnick also picked up an assist on the lone score of the period as Miami went to the locker room locked in a 1-1 tie after 40 minutes.
The Falcons took five of the first six shots in the third period and got a power play at the 6:35 mark, but the RedHawks did not allow a shot on goal to leave the score tied. While it was a generally even period, Miami started to establish its possession game more and more as regulation wore on. All five RedHawk skaters made the winning goal happen in the waning seconds as Hutton and Richart kept the line with the latter sending the puck around the wall to Sean Kuraly, who swung it for Gacek behind the goal line. Gacek then sent the puck atop the left circle to Louis, who one-timed a shot through traffic with two seconds left to put the Red and White into the win column.
Miami ended up getting outshot 29-27 overall, but held a 21-17 edge in shots on goal over the final two periods. Both teams went scoreless without a shot on goal on their two power plays. Williams stopped 28 of 29 shots to extend his personal unbeaten streak to three games while both Louis and Gacek posted a goal and an assist in the win. Nell turned away 25 of Miami's 27 shots at the other end.
The RedHawks concluded their five-game home stand to start January and resume National Collegiate Hockey Conference play at Omaha on Friday night. That game will be nationally televised on CBSSN.
