Miami Falls to WKU, 56-14

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The Miami University football team fell to Western Kentucky University, 56-14, Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Hilltoppers improve to 3-1.
Senior quarterback Drew Kummer finished the game 7-for-12 for 78 yards and one touchdown. His favorite target on the day was freshman wide receiver Chris Hudson, who finished with four catches for 64 yards and one touchdown.
The Hilltoppers struck first on the opening possession of the game with a 10-play, 90-yard drive, finished off by a 9-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Doughty to Antwane Grant. The extra point by Garrett Schwettman made it 7-0 at the 11:08 mark of the first quarter.
Doughty found Taylor for a 59-yard touchdown pass on WKU's next drive. The Schwettman extra point gave the Hilltoppers a 14-0 lead with 10:08 left in the opening period.
Trailing 28-0 in the second quarter, the Miami offense was able to get into gear. Kummer drove the RedHawks down the field for a 12-play, 81-yard drive. He was 5-for-7 for 75 yards while leading Miami to a score, completing a 10-yard pass to Hudson for the touchdown. The extra point from senior Kaleb Patterson made it 28-7 with 6:31 to go in the second quarter.
The RedHawks attempted an onside kick after scoring, however WKU was able to recover. The `Toppers were able to use the short field to punch it in on a 4-yard rush by Nicholas Norris. WKU scored twice more before the break to take a 49-7 lead into halftime.
With the score 56-7 in the fourth quarter, Miami was able to move down the field for a 10-play, 77-yard drive. It was capped off when freshman quarterback Gus Ragland completed a 16-yard pass to sophomore tight end Ryan Smith for the touchdown. It was Ragland's first career touchdown pass. Patterson's extra point made it 56-14 with 7:28 remaining in the contest and concluded the game's scoring.
Miami begins MAC play next Saturday when it travels to Kent State. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and it will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
