OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team set the tempo early on their way to a 5-0 win over Ohio State Wednesday evening. The win brings the RedHawks' record to 6-4 on the year, while the Buckeyes drop to 5-3.
From the outset of the match, the RedHawks put pressure on the Ohio State defense. However, early on, the Buckeye goalkeeper was up to the task. A relentless Miami attack continued to press, finally breaking through in the 23rd minute. The play started when Carla Romagosa delivered a beautiful stretch pass to a streaking Henni Otten, who dribbled the ball in and buried the shot for her second score on the year.
Less than seven minutes later, the Red & White struck again when Geagy Pritchard cradled the ball into the goalmouth and delivered a pass to Bea Dechant, who finished it off with a between-the-legs tally.
The first half ended with Miami leading, 2-0. The RedHawks also led in shot attempts, 10-3, while penalty corners were knotted at two apiece.
The RedHawks wasted no time extending their lead in the second half. Just under five minutes into the game's final frame, Otten netted her second goal of the game. The tally was assisted by Dechant, whose initial shot was kicked away, ultimately ending up right on the stick of Otten.
The 52nd minute saw Megan Paul collect her first goal of the season after Mariona Heras provided a cross pass in front of the net. Paul positioned herself and jammed home the score. Miami added an insurance tally off of a penalty corner with the clock already expired. Heras made added another helper after passing off to Dechant, who rifled it into the back of the net, sealing a 5-0 RedHawk win.
Goalkeeper Alysa Xavier, fresh off of a MAC Defensive Player of the Week award, made three saves on the way to her fourth shutout of 2015.
The RedHawks return to the pitch on Sunday as they take on Wake Forest in game two of six in their season-long six game home stand. Game time is set for 12 p.m. We will see you there!
