Miami Defeats Wright State in Straight Sets, 3-0

OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University volleyball team cruised to its first win of the season with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) victory over Wright State on Tuesday. The RedHawks improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Raiders fall to 3-1.

Miami's offense was clicking on all cylanders as the Red and White hit .300 for the match. The RedHawks had only seven attack errors in 120 attempts. It was a very balanced offense as senior middle hitter Jenny Ingle, senior outside hitter Maris Below and senior right side hitter Katie Tomasic each finished with nine kills, while sophomore outside hitter Olivia Rusek had eight.

The teams traded the first few points of set one before Miami was able to take control. Tied at 10, a kill from Tomasic and a service ace by Below started a 6-3 run that put the `Hawks in front, 16-13. Wright State scored the next two points to pull within one, but Miami responded with four straight to make it 20-15. After the Raiders scored three in a row to force a RedHawks timeout, Tomasic came back to put down two kills, while Rusek had another one off an assist from freshman setter Mackenzie Zielinski as part of a 5-0 run that finished off a 25-18 win.

Junior middle hitter Paige Hill and sophomore middle/right side hitter Meredith Stutz each recorded kills, while sophomore setter Krista Brakauskas had a service ace to help Miami open up a 9-7 lead to begin set two. In front, 11-10, Miami went on a 6-0 run to take control. Wright State attempted to mount a comeback, but a pair of Ingle kills helped maintain the Red and White advantage. Leading 22-18, two kills from Below and one from Hill gave Miami a 25-19 victory.

The Raiders jumped to a 9-7 advantage to begin set three. Kills from Rusek and Stutz, a block by Stutz and Hill and a service ace from Tomasic started a 5-0 run that put the RedHawks up, 12-9. In front 16-14, a pair of blocks by Hill and Tomasic were part of a 3-1 run that made it 19-15 and forced a Wright State timeout. After the break, the Raiders scored the next point, but Miami responded with six straight to finish off a 25-16 victory and take the match, 3-0.

Ingle led Miami with a .692 attack percentage, while Tomasic hit .409. Zielinski finished with a double-double of 21 assists and 12 digs. Hill recorded eight blocks (one solo and seven assisted), while sophomore libero Maeve McDonald led the RedHawks with 16 digs. Miami held Wright State to a .172 attack percentage for the match.

Miami returns to tournament play this weekend when it participates in the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan. On Friday, the RedHawks will take on Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. and Butler at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, Miami takes on the host, 19th-ranked Michigan State at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, the RedHawks will travel to the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio for the final day of the AVP's Cincinnati Open. At 2 p.m. there will be a special exhibition where a couple of Miami volleyball players will join RedHawk alums and celebrities to take on a pair of Cincinnati players, their alums and celebrities in a friendly beach volleyball match.
