Miami Sweeps Iowa State on the Road

AMES, Iowa – The Miami University softball team earned a big doubleheader sweep of Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Sunday. The RedHawks won the first game 9-4 and came back to win the nightcap, 5-3. Miami improves to 15-10 on the season, while the Cyclones fall to 18-11.
Offensively, senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall was the star from the leadoff spot. She finished the doubleheader 5-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored. She drew two walks and was hit by a pitch, reaching base eight times in nine plate appearances for an on-base percentage of .889.
Junior pitcher Amber Logemann is from Earlham, Iowa, only about an hour southwest of the Iowa State campus in Ames. She made the most of her homecoming, earning the victory in both contests. She allowed five runs on 10 hits total in 8.0 innings pitched among the two games. She struck out five.
The opener started off in a big way for the RedHawks as they scored five runs in the top of the first inning. Marshall led off with a walk. A single from junior designated player Tanya Busby and a hit by pitch from sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver loaded the bases with no one out. Another walk, this time to freshman catcher Rylee Whispel, forced home Marshall to put Miami on the board. Junior outfielder Taylor Shuey followed with a single to right field, scoring Busby and McCarver and making it 3-0. Two batters later, senior third baseman Remy Edwards doubled to left field, scoring Whispel and Shuey to give the ‘Hawks a 5-0 advantage.
Iowa State got three back in the bottom of the second to cut the Miami lead to 5-3.
In the top of the fourth, senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb led off with a double down the leftfield line. Edwards drew a walk. Senior shortstop Kylie McChesney moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt. A double to leftfield by Marshall brought home Lipscomb and made it 6-3.
The Cyclones answered with a run on two hits and a walk off Logemann in the bottom of the fifth. Senior pitcher Megan Mattera came in at the point and shut down the ISU offense the rest of the way.
Miami took control of the game with two runs in the top of the sixth. Marshall led off with a single, while Busby drew a walk. McCarver moved each of them up a base on a sacrifice bunt. A deep fly to right by Whispel allowed Marshall to come home. A single up the middle by Shuey scored Busby and gave Miami an 8-4 lead.
The RedHawks completed their scoring in the top of the seventh. An infield single to second base by McCarver brought home McChesney to give the Red and White a 9-4 win.
Marshall finished the opener 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Shuey was 2-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored, while Edwards was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Whispel also had two RBI for the RedHawks.
Logemann earned the victory, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out four. Mattera allowed only one hit in 3.0 innings pitched to record her second save of the season.
Miami struck first again in the second game with two runs in the top of the second. Senior first baseman Shanyn McIntyre and Lipscomb each walked to begin the frame. After two outs were recorded, McChesney drew her own walk to load the bases. A single through the left side by Marshall brought home McIntyre and put the ‘Hawks on the board. Another walk by McCarver forced home Lipscomb to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
Iowa State tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the third off the Miami starter Edwards. Logemann would come in beginning in the bottom of the fourth and pitch the rest of the way.
With one out in the top of the fourth, Marshall doubled down the leftfield line. One batter later, Shuey gave Miami the lead back with a single to left center, which scored Marshall. The RedHawks made it 4-2 in the next inning when a single up the middle by freshman third baseman Kat Lee scored McIntyre.
After Iowa State got one back in the bottom of the fifth, Miami completed the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth. An infield single to the shortstop by McIntyre was deep enough to allow Marshall to score and make it 5-3.
Logemann made sure there would be no Cyclone comeback as she quickly retired the home team in the final two innings, allowing only one infield hit. She earned the victory in relief, giving up one run and five hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
Marshall finished the nightcap 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored. McIntyre was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Due to rain in the forecast on Tuesday, Miami has moved up its doubleheader against Western Illinois to Monday. The first game will begin at 4 p.m. (EDT) in Macomb, Illinois.
