Miami Sweeps North Dakota on Monday

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team used some timely hitting and some clutch pitching from junior Amber Logemann to earn a doubleheader sweep of North Dakota on Monday. The RedHawks won the first game in walk-off fashion, 5-4. They then took the nightcap, 4-2. Miami improves to 13-9 on the season, while UND falls to 6-18.
The RedHawks struck first in the bottom of the first inning of the opener. With two outs, sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver doubled to centerfield. The next batter, freshman catcher Rylee Whispel, doubled down the leftfield line, scoring McCarver and giving Miami a 1-0 lead.
That was all the offense the Red and White could manage for awhile as North Dakota scored one in the second and three in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead before Miami began its comeback.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior Tiyona Marshall led off with a double to right center. After an out was recorded, Marshall advanced to third on a wild pitch. McCarver then drove her in on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb drew a walk. Senior designated player Shanyn McIntyre proceeded to tie the game at four with her second home run of the year, a line shot over the centerfield wall.
Still tied in the bottom of the seventh, McCarver led off with a walk. Whispel put down a sacrifice bunt to move her over to second. Junior outfielder Taylor Shuey was intentionally walked. The two runners then advanced on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, McIntyre was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freshman third baseman Kat Lee came to the plate and took a 3-2 pitch high for a walk of her own to force home McCarver and give the RedHawks a 5-4 win.
Marshall finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored. McIntyre was 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Lee was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Logemann got the win after coming into the game in relief in the seventh and retiring UND in order.
Logemann got the start in the second game was perfect for the first three innings. Miami broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third. Marshall led off with a single through the right side. Junior outfielder Tanya Busby bunted for a base hit. On the play, the third baseman threw the ball away, allowing Marshall to advance to third. McCarver followed with a double to score Marshall and put the ‘Hawks on the board. After a strikeout, Shuey singled up the middle, scoring Busby and McCarver and giving Miami a 3-0 lead.
North Dakota answered back with its first hit in the top of the fourth. It eventually was able to score two runs on three hits in the frame to pull within one at 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, senior third baseman Remy Edwards led off with a single through the left side. Senior shortstop Kylie McChesney reached on a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by Marshall moved the runners up a base. Busby followed with a groundout to short, allowing Edwards to score and make it 4-2.
Meanwhile, Logemann settled down once again and allowed only one more hit as she shut out North Dakota the rest of the way to preserve the victory. She earned a complete game victory, allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out 10.
Busby finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Shuey was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while McCarver was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Miami returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Louisville for a single game that will begin at 4 p.m.
