OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team gained a split at its home invitational on Saturday. After dropping a 1-0 pitcher’s duel against Robert Morris in their opener, the Miami offense got back on track with a 14-3 victory over Detroit in the nightcap. That game ended after five innings due to the run-rule. Miami is now 11-8 on the season.
The RedHawks had their biggest offensive explosion of the season in the second game against Detroit (1-16). It started with five runs in the top of the first. With two runners on base, a single to centerfield by senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb brought home senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall and junior outfielder Taylor Shuey to put Miami on the board. One batter later, junior first baseman Hailey Reed doubled down the leftfield line to move Lipscomb to third. They both were able to trot home when senior catcher Shanyn McIntyre blasted a deep shot over the centerfield wall to make it 5-0.
The offense kept the momentum going in the top of the second. With two outs and no one on, Shuey singled through the left side. A triple from sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver scored her and gave Miami a 6-0 lead. Lipscomb followed with a walk and then stole second. Senior designated player Megan Mattera singled to right center, scoring both McCarver and Lipscomb to make it 8-0.
In the top of the third, a single through the left side by Shuey brought home McIntyre and senior shortstop Kylie McChesney. Freshman Kaitlyn Gliha was up next as a pinch-hitter. She hit a bloop single down the left field line to bring home Marshall and make it 11-0.
Detroit got one back in the bottom of the third. The RedHawks completed their scoring with three runs in the top of the fifth. Junior outfielder Tanya Busby led off with a single to third base. Shuey doubled to leftfield, scoring Busby. One batter later, Lipscomb doubled to score Shuey. One batter after that, a single from Reed scored Lipscomb and made it 14-1.
The Titans score two unearned runs off two errors and a hit in the bottom of the fifth, but with the score 14-3 at the end of five, the game came to an end due to the run rule.
Shuey finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Lipscomb was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, while McIntyre was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Fredericks pitched all five innings, allowing only one earned run on five hits. She struck out five in earning her first career win.
The opener was a pitcher’s duel between Miami’s Amber Logemann and Robert Morris’ Nicole Sleith. Logemann kept the Colonials in check for the majority of the game, but a walk, followed by a double and a single brought home the game’s only run in the top of the second. Logemann finished the contest throwing six innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out four. Mattera came into the game in the top of the seventh and retired RMU in order.
Meanwhile Sleith was on top of her game as she allowed Miami only two hits in seven innings pitched. Marshall was able to reach second base after singling in the bottom of the fourth, while McCarver drew a leadoff walk and was moved over to second base on a groundout in the bottom of the seventh, but each time Sleith was able to end the threat.
Shuey recorded the other hit for Miami against Robert Morris.
The RedHawks complete play at the Miami Invitational on Sunday when they take on Dayton at 3:45 p.m.
