OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University men's basketball team finished the preseason with a 90-24 win over Ohio Midwestern on Wednesday evening at Millett Hall. Senior guard Geovonie McKnight led a quartet of RedHawks to score in double figures with 19 points.
Miami jumped out to a 4-0 start in just 10 seconds by way of a layup by sophomore guard Abdoulaye Harouna and tip-in senior forward Chris Bryant. Ohio Midwestern's Kadeem Palmer answered back with a 3-pointer to make it 4-3 and get the Rams as close as they would be for the remainder of the contest.
Three-pointers by senior guard Willie Moore and sophomore forward Rod Mills helped push the RedHawks ahead even further. Miami went on a 20-2 run to end the first half, capped by a breakaway dunk by Moore as time expired. The RedHawks took a 41-18 lead into the locker room. The first half saw participation from much of the team, as eight of the 10 `Hawks to see the court recorded points.
Miami continued their dominance after halftime, opening with a 19-2 run. The Rams posted their first non-free throw points since 5:03 in the first when senior forward Robbie Smyth scored on a layup halfway through the second to make it 60-22. The RedHawks continued to suppress the Rams' offense, forcing them to settle for perimeter shots. Miami was right there to pick up those rebounds, as Mills and senior forward Jere Vucica each finished with double-digit caroms with 10 and 11, respectively. Redshirt sophomore guard Dion Wade had a busy second half to finish with 15 points on the day. The RedHawks outscored Ohio Midwestern 49-6 in the latter half of the game.
The Rams were led in scoring by Smyth, who finished with six points. The senior also led the team in rebounds with four.
Miami opens its season at Xavier on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. The game will be aired on Fox College. Miami then returns to Millett Hall for its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 17, hosting Kenyon at 7 p.m. That game will air on ESPN3.
