OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior men's basketball guard Eric Washington and sophomore women's basketball guard Baleigh Reid are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 16-22.
Washington helped Miami to a 3-1 mark last week and propelled the RedHawks to the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge title and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Against an undefeated Northeastern team, Washington poured in 17 points and handed out six assists while shooting 55.6 percent from the field and knocking down 5-of-6 free throws in the winning effort to hand the Huskies their first loss of the season. He knocked down two critical triples to put Miami ahead after clawing back from a nine-point second-half deficit against the Huskies and knocked down the go-ahead jumper with 6:02 to go. Over the three-game tournament, Washington averaged an impressive 6.7 assists per game, handing out seven assists in two games in six in the finale. He also notched a career-high four steals in win against Lipscomb to open tournament play for the Red and White. Earlier in the week Washington helped MU to a home-opening win against Kenyon to push the RedHawks to 89-22 in home-openers all-time. For the week, Washington averaged 10.3 ppg, 5.8 apg, 2.5 rpg and shot 46.2 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.
This is the first time this season and fourth time in his career that Washington has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Feb. 16-22, 2014.
Reid was a scoring machine in leading Miami to a pair of wins last week. She averaged 24.5 points per game and shot a sizzling .564 percent. She also brought in 12 rebounds, averaging 6.0 caroms per contest. In the RedHawks' 91-85 double overtime win over Evansville on Monday, Reid scored a career-high 29 points, hitting 13-of-24 shots in 41 minutes of action. She also brought in eight rebounds and had three assists and a steal. In leading Miami to a 75-60 victory over Austin Peay on Thursday, Reid scored 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting. She had an assist, a block and a steal in 31 minutes of action.
This is the first time this season and fourth time in in her career that Reid has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Feb. 16-22, 2014.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Nov. 30.
