OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University volleyball team won for the seventh time in the past eight matches when it earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-15) victory over Bowling Green on Thursday. The RedHawks improve to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in the MAC. The Falcons fall to 5-13 overall and 1-4 in the MAC.
Sophomore right side hitter Katie Tomasic led a balanced Miami offense in the win. She recorded eight kills, and made only one attack error in 17 attempts for a hitting percentage of .412. She also had five digs and two blocks. Junior middle hitter Paige Hill was right behind her with seven kills and zero errors in 13 attempts for a .538 attack percentage. She recorded a team-high four blocks (one solo and three assisted).
The RedHawks had one of their best serving matches of the season, keeping the Falcons out of system all-night long. It included a season-high tying eight service aces. Freshman setter Mackenzie Zielinski led the way with four, while sophomore outside hitter Olivia Rusek had three.
Tomasic had two early kills, while junior setter Krista Brakauskas recorded a service ace to help Miami open up a 6-4 lead to begin set one. After Bowling Green tied the score at seven, the Red and White went on a 5-0 run to take control at 12-7. In front 13-11, two straight service aces from Zielinski started a 6-3 run that gave Miami a 19-14 advantage. BGSU did not give up as it answered with a 4-1 run to pull within two at 18-20. A block by senior middle hitter Jenny Ingle and sophomore middle/right side hitter Meredith Stutz got the RedHawks offense going again, while two kills from Rusek would finish off a 25-21 victory.
Bowling Green started out strong in set two, building a 12-7 lead. Trailing 8-13, a block from senior outside hitter Annie Reiswig began an 8-0 run for Miami that put it back in front by a 16-13 score. During that run, the `Hawks recorded what might be the best point of the season. Rusek was able to chase a ball deep into the corner just as it was about to go out. Tomasic then sent the ball to the other side on the over pass, but the Falcons were out of position and it dropped for a kill. BGSU got the score to within one at 20-21, but three straight kills from Rusek, Tomasic and Ingle off assists from Brakauskas gave Miami set point. A Falcon attack error on the next point finished off a 25-20 win.
Set three began with two consecutive service aces by Zielinski. A block by Hill and Tomasic, along with a service ace from Rusek allowed Miami to eventually push the advantage to 7-1. In front 9-4, kills from Stutz, Rusek and Hill were part of a 7-4 run that made it a 16-8 lead. Bowling Green would be unable to make the score much closer. In front 19-13, two kills from Tomasic were part of a 6-2 run that completed a 25-15 win and gave the RedHawks the match in straight sets.
Rusek recorded seven kills, while Ingle and Reiswig each had six. Zielinski led the way with 17 assists, while Brakauskas had a double-double with 14 assists and a season-high tying 18 digs. Miami hit .231 for the match, and held Bowling Green to a .153 attack percentage.
The RedHawks hit the road Saturday when they travel to DeKalb to take on Northern Illinois for an 8 p.m. (EDT) match.
