OXFORD, OHIO -- The Miami University field hockey team showed their unwillingness to give up Sunday afternoon before ultimately falling, 6-2, to No. 8 Maryland. The loss drops the RedHawks' record to seven wins and six losses on the year.
The game began at a quick pace with both teams creating chances on offense. Maryland broke through first in the game's ninth minute when Sarah Sprink scored off a penalty corner. The Terps followed that up with another goal just over four minutes later. This time, it was Linnea Gonzales. Miami kept pressing and placed several shots on the UMD goalkeeper in the minutes following. The Terps potted one more goal before the half in the 33rd minute, taking a 3-0 lead into the break.
Shot attempts at the half were 10-6 in favor of Maryland, while Miami held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Miami came out focused in the second half, receiving their closest chance yet when Mariona Heras fired a shot from the top of the circle that rang off of the post. Maryland kept grinding too and their effort paid off again when they scored again in the 48th minute. Just three minutes later, the Terps went up 5-0 on a goal by Lein Holsboer. Down five with just under 15 minutes to play, head coach Inako Puzo called timeout to gather his team. The move paid dividends in the moments following as Estel Roig collected her first goal as a RedHawk. The freshman's tip-in tally came off of a shot attempt from Mariona Heras. Just over three minutes later, the Red & White garnered another chance after earning a penalty stroke. Miami capitalized on the opportunity as Bea Dechant buried the stroke for her sixth goal of the season.
UMD tacked on one more goal in the closing seconds, making it a 6-2 final.
Miami returns to the field Friday as they host Ball State in a critical MAC matchup. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
