LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 10 RedHawks fell to the No. 19 Louisville Cardinals Friday to open regular-season play, losing 2-1 in a shootout to end the game. Meg Canfield scored Miami's lone goal in regulation early in the third quarter. The RedHawks fall to 0-1 and Louisville improves to 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Sloane Wearren recorded the game's first shot on goal late in the first quarter, but a save by Louisville's Emily Young kept the game scoreless.
Louisville's first shot on net came on a breakaway with five minutes left in the first and resulted in a goal to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Wearren followed with another shot on goal late in the second quarter for the RedHawks, but Young made another save.
Bet Gifra opened the third quarter with two quick shots on target, both of which were saved. Minutes later, midfielder Canfield leveled the score, recording Miami's first goal of the season with a shot between Young's pads.
The RedHawk offense notched three shots on target and a penalty corner to end the third quarter but were unable to score, maintaining the 1-1 tie.
Strong defense from both teams resulted in a scoreless fourth quarter and brought the game to a 15-minute sudden-death overtime period.
The RedHawks generated an early penalty corner in overtime but were unable to score. Key stops from Lucia Ventos and Julia Fernandez on a breakaway and a penalty corner, respectively, kept the game tied and forced a shootout.
The Cardinals scored on their first attempt, taking a 1-0 lead. Young and Nicky Sjouken each stopped the next three attempts they faced.
Maggie Reed tied the shootout at 1-1 after pulling Young out to the right and firing across the goal on Miami's fourth attempt.
The Cardinals reclaimed the lead by scoring on their final attempt. Miami's final attempt went wide left, rounding out a 2-1 shootout loss.
