Miami Loses 2-1 Battle vs No. 2 Iowa in Fourth Quarter

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 16 Miami went toe-to-toe with the second-ranked University of Iowa Friday, losing 2-1 after the Hawkeyes scored two fourth quarter goals on penalty corners. Toto Scarlatti was the goal scorer for Miami, scoring her first collegiate goal in the second quarter. Miami falls to 3-2 with the loss while Iowa maintains a perfect record at 5-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Iowa had the first scoring opportunity of the game as the nation's leading scorer Frederique van Cleef put a shot on goal about five minutes into play. Nicky Sjouken deflected the shot to make the game's first save.
Bet Gifra took the first shot for Miami in the 11th minute, which was immediately followed by two penalty corner opportunities for the RedHawks. Máxi Aguirregomezcorta took a shot on both attempts but a save and a block held the tie.
Gifra continued the attack, taking a shot early in the second quarter before Iowa won back possession and took two shots of their own, requiring another save from Sjouken.
With four minutes to play in the half, the RedHawks generated a penalty corner. The shot by Justina Intzes was saved but Judit Garcia Gregori managed the rebound and set up Scarlatti, who pounded a reverse-stick shot into the back of the net to earn her first collegiate goal and give Miami a 1-0 lead.
Iowa generated a corner with seconds to play in the half, but the Miami defense blocked the attempt out of play to end the half.
Sjouken opened the third quarter with another save against van Cleef. Iowa dominated possession in the third quarter but Miami's defense held strong, preventing the Hawkeyes from getting another shot off.
The RedHawks put together an attack early in the fourth quarter but were stopped. With nine minutes to play, an obstruction call gave Iowa a penalty corner. The Hawkeyes executed and scored to tie the game 1-1.
Minutes later, the Hawkeyes put together another penalty corner and capitalized, taking a 2-1 lead.
The RedHawks were unable to close the gap, finalizing a 2-1 loss.

MIAMI GAME NOTES:

Gifra and Aguirregomezcorta each recorded two shots.
Scarlatti's goal marked the first of her college campaign.
Nicky Sjouken made three saves.
Miami recorded seven shots (three on goal) and Iowa recorded eight (five on goal).
Each team had three penalty corners.
