MT. PLEASANT, Mich. -- A penalty kick goal by Central Michigan's Taylor Potts proved enough to withstand a strong possession game as the Miami women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on Friday evening.
That loss is Miami's (6-4, 2-1 Mid-American) is its first since MAC play started and it ends MU's four-match winning streak.
The RedHawks adjusted well initially to playing their first match of the season on field turf. Miami held a 5-4 edge in shots and possessed the ball enough to create a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite the opportunities, MU was unable to crack the scoresheet during the opening 45 minutes of play. It appeared the contest would remain scoreless into the break, but the Chippewas (3-6-1, 2-1 MAC) were awarded a penalty kick in the 42nd minute, which Taylor Potts took advantage of by scoring her second goal of the season to hand CMU a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Central attempted two errant shots early in the second half, but the rest of regulation belonged to Miami. The Red and White fired the next seven shots to finish up with a 7-2 advantage in the final regulation frame. Rachel Marble had two to her credit that both got to the net, but CMU keeper Zoie Reed was there to make both saves.
The Red and White continued to press for a tying goal as time wore on, but they were ultimately unable to find the equalizer despite owning a 12-6 edge in shots for the match. Miami also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Vic Maniaci made one save as she allowed just her second goal in the last five matches. Zoie Reed stopped all six shots Miami sent her way.
Miami returns to the pitch on Sunday when it heads to Toledo for a 1 p.m. match.
