KENT, Ohio ââ'¬" The Miami University field hockey team battled until the end but fell to Kent State, 1-0 Friday afternoon. The loss drops the RedHawks' record to 9-7 on the year, including a 3-1 record in the MAC.
"This was a tough MAC game and we have to come prepared to play," said head coach Inako Puzo. "It's about playing each game for itself. We have to focus and move ahead to Central Michigan."
Miami got the game's first prime opportunity when they received the first penalty corner for either team. Bea Dechant got a shot off but it was saves be the KSU goalkeeper. Both teams traded chances ad possession but it was the Golden Flashes who broke through first in the 17th minute. The RedHawks fought back and composed themselves, ultimately outshooting KSU, 8-7 in the opening frame. Shots on goal were 5-3 in favor of Miami. The Red & White had two shot attempts in the closing seconds of the half, but the first was blocked and the second was turned away by the goalkeeper.
The second half saw the RedHawks get outshot, 7-6. However, shots on goal were 5-3 in favor of Miami. Despite the opportunities, the Red & White could not find the back of the net.
"We have to find the answer within ourselves to be able to play each game," said senior midfielder Bea Dechant. Today we did not take the steps we needed to in order to be successful but we can move forward and do so in our next game, which is against a strong MAC opponent."
