TORONTO, Ont. - Former Miami University forward Tyler Biggs has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League, Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke announced Thursday.
Biggs, a native of Loveland, Ohio, was a freshman for the RedHawks last season, scoring nine goals and adding eight assists for 17 points. He played in 37 of Miami's 41 games in 2011-12 and posted a +4 rating. He had a power play goal, a shorthanded goal and a game-winning goal during the year. The bruising right-winger also compiled 26 penalties for 63 minutes in his lone year at Miami.
The 6-foot-3 power forward was named CCHA Rookie of the Week for the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6 after a two-assist weekend at Alaska. He ranked in the top 10 among rookies in the CCHA with 13 points in league play and was 13th among CCHA freshmen in overall points.
Biggs was drafted in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Maple Leafs, being taken 22nd overall. Over the last week, he has been at the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. working towards making the U.S. Junior National Team for the 2013 World Junior Championships.
