OXFORD, Ohio - Having worked all over the country in various hockey positions for the last seven years, Brad Aldrich has been named Miami University's director of hockey operations, head coach Enrico Blasi announced Monday. He officially begins working with the Miami Hockey staff today, Monday, July 9.
While working at Miami, Aldrich will coordinate travel arrangements, set up meals and organize ice time. He will also handle much of Miami's video, organizing it, exchanging with teams and cutting clips for scouting reports.
"We're really excited to have Brad join our family," Blasi said. "He has tremendous experience at all levels of hockey, from youth programs to the NHL and even the Olympics. He will be a great addition to our staff."
Aldrich provides a wealth of experience in a variety of fields to the RedHawks, coming to Oxford from South Bend where he has served as the assistant programming and instruction manager at Notre Dame's new Compton Family Ice Arena for the last year. The Hancock, Mich., native also worked for the Fighting Irish for two seasons from 2006-2008, serving in the same role he is assuming at Miami. In his second and final year as coordinator of both video and hockey operations at UND, the Fighting Irish made the national championship game.
Aldrich has worked as a video coach or coordinator for several teams in his career, including the U.S. Men's National Hockey Team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where the Stars and Stripes captured the silver medal. He has also operated video for the U.S. Women's National Hockey Team since November of 2010, overseeing video for both the World U-18 championship team and the Women's World Championship team.
For two seasons from 2008-10, Aldrich served as a video coach for the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks, winning a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010. Chicago is not his only NHL experience, however, as he was a video coach intern with the San Jose Sharks in 2006. Following his internship with the Sharks he worked at Michigan Tech as their athletic promotions coordinator before moving on to Notre Dame.
Aldrich graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Northern Michigan in 2005, majoring in social studies while minoring in physical education and coaching. He substitute taught in Marquette, Mich. while in school and also coached various youth travel hockey teams in Marquette and for the San Jose Jr. Sharks prior to attending NMU. He has also coached youth teams from Michigan in select tournaments.
With Aldrich's hire, Miami's 2012-13 coaching staff is now complete, led by Blasi, who enters his 14th season at the helm. Brent Brekke enters his third season as the associate head coach and fifth as an assistant coach, Nick Petraglia begins his second season as an assistant coach and Matt Cady remains as the strength and conditioning coach for the hockey team. Tommy Hill will also join Miami's staff this season as a volunteer assistant coach, replacing Brian Kaufman.
The RedHawks open their 2012-13 season Oct. 7 with an exhibition game against Western Ontario.
