OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-0 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday. The game ended after five innings due to the run rule. The RedHawks improve to 28-16 overall and 9-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles fall to 19-28 overall and 5-11 in the MAC.
In total, 14 players came to the plate for the RedHawks during the bottom of the first inning. Kristy Arbour led off with a single to left field. Two batters later, Shanyn McIntyre walked. A Daniela Torres single to left center would load the bases with one out. Kayla Ledbetter would follow with a grounder to shortstop, but the ball was mishandled, allowing two runs to score. Casey Drees then singled down the left field line to bring in Torres and Ledbetter and make it 4-0. Two batters later, Kirstie Fehrenbach drew a walk. A single up the middle by Remy Edwards would reload the bases with two out. Arbour would get her second hit of the inning, a single through the left side to score Drees. A fielding error on a Jordan McElroy groundball would score Fehrenbach and make it 6-0. McIntyre then walked again, bringing home Edwards. Daniela Torres would hit a grounder to short, but the Eagles were unable to retire McIntyre at second, allowing Arbour to score and make it 8-0.
Miami would get two more runs in the bottom of the third inning when Taylor Rice would single with the bases loaded to drive home Torres and Brandi Hernandez.
For the second straight day, Jessica Simpson would keep Eastern Michigan off the scoreboard. She pitched all five innings, allowing only six hits and striking out eight. Just like on Saturday, no Eagle runner would reach third base on her. It was Simpson's third shutout of the weekend and eighth of the season. She is now 19-12 on the year.
Drees finished the game Sunday 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Arbour was 2-for3- with one RBI and two runs scored.
Miami hits the road next weekend as it travels to Buffalo Friday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
