OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team cruised to an 8-0 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday. The game ended after six innings due to the run-rule. The RedHawks improve to 27-16 overall and 8-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles fall to 19-27 overall and 5-10 in the MAC.
Miami struck quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, and Shanyn McIntyre on first, Daniela Torres drew a walk. The ball four pitch was wild, allowing McIntyre to move up to third base. Torres would then follow by stealing second. Kayla Ledbetter would bring everyone home with a towering home run that hit the left field light pole, her second home run of the season.
It stayed that way until the sixth inning when the RedHawks scored five runs to end the contest early. Megan Mattera started things off with a single to shortstop. She was replaced by pinch-runner Tiyona Marshall. Allie Larrabee was then safe on a fielding error by the second baseman. A groundout by Kristy Arbour moved both runners up a base. Casey Drees would follow with a double to right center that allowed Marshall to score. Larrabee had to hold up at third as she was waiting to see if the ball was caught before advancing. Kaitlyn O'Donnell would draw a walk to load the bases. McElroy would then clear them with a triple to left field that made it 7-0. Two batters later, Ashley Zappia would single to third base, allowing McElroy to score and give Miami an 8-0 win.
Jessica Simpson was in control in the circle once again for the Red and White. She allowed only four hits during her six innings of work, not allowing a single Eagle runner past second base. She struck out eight to improve her record to 18-12 on the season.
McElroy finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Ledbetter was also 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored.
