Softball Defeats Penn State, 5-2

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Miami University softball team earned a strong, 5-2, win over Penn State Wednesday afternoon. The game was played at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. The RedHawks improve to 11-4 overall, while the Nittany Lions fall to 6-9.
Miami got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kirstie Fehrenbach led things off with a single down the left field line. Two batters later, Bree Lipscomb smashed a ball over the left field wall for her first career home run to make it 2-0 RedHawks.
In the bottom of the second, Jordan McElroy led things off with a single to centerfield. Two batters later, Taylor Rice singled to move her up to second. A passed ball moved her up to third base. Fehrenbach then singled to the shortstop to bring McElroy home and make it 3-0.
A couple of errors the next two innings led to two unearned runs that allowed Penn State to pull within one at 3-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Kristy Arbour opened with a single down the left field line. Fehrenbach moved her up to second with her third hit of the game. A wild pitch would move Arbour up to third, while a Lipscomb groundout would score her.
Miami completed its scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth. A Shanyn McIntyre single down the right field line would bring Arbour home and make it 5-2. Penn State would load the bases in the top of the seventh with only one out, but Jessica Simpson get a strikeout and a groundout to secure the victory for the Red and White.
Simpson pitched well in earning her sixth victory of the season. She didn't allow a single earned run on seven hits. She struck out 11.
Lipscomb finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Fehrenbach was 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Arbour was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Miami begins play in the Under Armour Showcase on Friday. The RedHawks will take on 23rd-ranked Syracuse at 4:15 p.m. and Central Connecticut State at 6:30 p.m.
