Five-Run First Keys 6-3 RedHawk Win

OXFORD, Ohio -- A five-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Dan Walsh, lifted Miami to a 6-0 victory over Xavier in college baseball action Wednesday night at McKie Field. Freshman Brian Thene (1-0) picked up the victory in his first collegiate start for the RedHawks, allowing three hits and a walk in three predetermined innings of work.

Bryce Redeker, Marcus Makuch and Dan Walsh each had a pair of hits for Miami (12-9), with Walsh and Kevin Bower each driving in two runs. Every other RedHawk starter but one had

The first three batters for the RedHawks all reached base and scored. Ryan Brenner was hit by a pitch and went to second on a Matt Honchel single. Redeker drilled an 0-2 pitch off the third baseman for an infield single that loaded the bases. After a sacrifice fly by Bower put Miami 1-0, John Crummy and Max Andresen each singled through the right side to make the score 3-0. Makuch poked a grounder through the left side of the infield to load the bases, setting up Walsh for a two-run double to left center and a 5-0 lead.

The RedHawks added a run in the fourth when Bower delivered a two-out single to left center, plating Brenner, whoe walked, stole second and went to third on an error.

Xavier (7-13) got on the board in the sixth with a two-out triple and run-scoring single. It added two in the ninth with back-to-back doubles and an RBI groundout.

Musketeer starter Jacob Bodner (0-1) took the loss after allowing nine hits and six runs in 3.2 innings. After Thene, four Miami pitchers kept Xavier in check, scattering six hits.

The RedHawks return to action this weekend when it opens Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan. First pitch in the series is at 6 p.m. Friday
