What a fantastic week. While it wasn't a complete sweep for the RedHawks, many teams and athletics had outstanding performances to report. For some, that means peaking right as the postseason is about to start, while for others, it means getting a new year off on the right foot.
ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: No. 19 Miami (19-13-2, 13-11-2-1 CCHA) rode the excitement of a jam-packed Steve Cady Arena to two key wins over No. 13 Notre Dame. Connor Knapp stopped all 31 shots he faced on Friday for a 3-0 win, and made 28 saves the following night enroute to a 4-1 decision. In the opener, Blake Coleman put Miami up 1-0 just 2:08 into the contest, then Reilly Smith added a power-play goal later in the first period. Tyler Biggs closed out the scoring with an empty-netter. (RECAP) Saturday night had a similar script with Smith getting another power play goal at the 5:12 mark and Trent Vogelhuber doubling the lead with 3:12 remaining in the first period. Cody Murphy registered the final two tallies, giving Miami a season-long four-game winning streak. (RECAP) Don't forget to participate in two separate jersey auctions currently being held (RELEASE) This Week: Miami wraps up the regular-season with a home-and-home series with Ohio State. Ten seniors will be honored in a cerermony following the 6:05 p.m. contest. With the early 6:05 start time for CBS Sports Network television, Miami Athletics has pair with concessions for a some dinner-time specials from 5 p.m. to faceoff: two-for-one hotdogs, $1 fountain soda and water, $2 nachos and cheese and $3 pizza. The teams conclude the 2011-12 schedule the following night in Columbus
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (8-17, 4-8) dropped a pair of decisions, falling 74-59 at Akron and 68-61 to Tennessee State in the Sears Bracketbuster event. Against the Zips, Brian Sullivan led all scorers with 19 points, knocking down five first-half three-pointers. Jon Harris chipped 14 points, while Julian Mavunga and Quinten Rollins added 11 and 10 points, respectively. (RECAP) In the final non-conference game of the season Sunday, Mavunga led all scorers with 15 points and also added eight rebounds, while Harris and Sullivan each tallied 12 points. (RECAP) This Week: Miami reached the penultimate week of the 2011-12 season with two MAC East games. The RedHawks host Kent State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Buffalo for a Saturday afternoon affair. Former RedHawk great Wally Szczerbiak will be honored as a part of the Fantastic Fourteen season ticket promotion on Tuesday. Students can register to win a VIP experience with Szczerbiak before the contest (RELEASE)
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (19-7, 9-4) continued its push towards a berth in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals in Cleveland with wins over Kent State, 69-65 in overtime, and Buffalo 66-50. Trailing 46-35 with 11:27 to go Wednesday, the RedHawk forced the extra session with a spirited comeback. Hannah Robertson tallied a career-high 21 points, while Courtney Osborn added 16 points, including a pair of free throws with three seconds left in regulation. (RECAP) Kirsten Olowinski almost single-handedly led Miami at Buffalo, finishing with a season-high 22 points and career-high-tying 19 rebounds. It was her 10th double-double of the season. Osborn had a tough shooting day against the Bulls, but dished out a team-leading eight assists, while still becoming the sixth player in school history to reach 1,500 career points. (RECAP) This Week: Miami returns to Millett Hall on Wednesday for a 12 noon start against Akron. Please note the change in start time to accomodate Talawanda Middle School's "Goals for Life Day". On Saturday, the RedHawks hit the road for a matchup with league-leader Bowling Green.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: A pair of RedHawks won events Friday at the Ball State Quadrangular, which served as a final dress rehearsal before the Mid-American Conference Championships next weekend. Kori Tatman won the pole vault with a personal-best vault of 12-9/3.89m, which ranks her second in school history. Miami's other first-place finish was in the shot put where senior Alexandra Roberts was victorious with a heave of 47-10/14.58m. (RECAP) This Week:The RedHawks return to Akron, Ohio for the MAC Championships Feb. 24-25 at the University of Akron's Stile Field House. Miami is looking to improve upon last year's third-place finish.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: In the second of two indoor meets allowed under NCAA rules, Miami captured a pair of event titles at the Buckeye Tune-Up in Columbus. The RedHawks captured the top two spots in the 1,000m run behind Jarrod Eick, who won in 2:31.83, and Wade Coffin (2:33.74). Jack Spilman won the 800m run in an indoor personal-best 1:53.14. (RECAP) This Week: With the indoor portion of Miami's schedule now complete, the RedHawks return to action March 23-24 at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
BASEBALL
Last Week: The 2012 Miami baseball season got off to a strong overall start with the RedHawks taking two of three from the Furman Paladins. Miami had a rocky beginning, dropping the opener 8-2 on Friday (FRIDAY RECAP) before rallying with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. (SATURDAY RECAP) Kevin Bower was the offensive force, batting .636 with one home run and six runs batted in over the three games. Newcomers Matt Honchel (.571), Alex Johnson (.333) and Scott Slappey all tallied at least four hits, which each driving in three. This Week: The RedHawks return to Greenville, S.C., to participate in the First Pitch Invitational, hosted by the Greenville Drive minor league baseball club. The RedHawks face Michigan State on Friday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 noon), with a rematch against the Paladins set for Saturday at noon.
TENNIS
Last Week: For the third straight match, Miami (2-7) battled a top-tier team, but came up on the short end of a 5-2 decision. Playing in Lincoln, Neb., the RedHawks fell to Washington State on Saturday and the 28th-ranked Huskers on Sunday. Stephanie Danesis and Christiana Raymond earned Miami's points against the Cougars (RECAP), while Raymond and Alix Thurman posted wins on Sunday. (RECAP) This Week: Miami wraps up a seven-match road swing with a trip to State College, Pa. for two matches. The RedHawks face Marshall on Saturday before challenging Penn State on Sunday.
GOLF
Last Week: In its first action of the spring season, Miami took fourth place at the Mid-American Match Play Championship in Dade City, Fla. The seventh-seeded RedHawks opened with a 4-2 win over Akron (DAY 2 RECAP), but lost 3.5-2.5 to Eastern Michigan and 4.5-1.5 to Northern Illinois (DAY 1 RECAP). Mark MacDonald and Scott Cahill each won two of their three individual matches during the event. This Week: The RedHawks are off until next month when it competes at the UCF Rio Pinar Invitational March 19-20.
After a week off, softball returns to action Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Blues City Classic in Memphis, Tenn. The RedHawks face Memphis, Southeast Missouri State, Missouri State, Western Illinois and Northern Iowa in the round-robin event. The Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championship takes place in Akron this week with events Thursday Friday and Saturday. And don't forget about Synchonized Skating's National Championship Send-off Exhibition Saturday at 2 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena. Admission is free.
The Miami ticket office is in the process of two major campaigns. Postseason tickets for the MAC Tournament in Cleveland and CCHA Tournament in Detroit are now on sale. Season tickets holders have until February 24 to reserve their current seats. The deadline for current football season ticket holders and Red & White Club members to order 2012 season tickets and buy tickets for the game at Ohio State is fast approaching. On March 1, both of those offers will be extended to everyone, including the general public.
