Miami Hockey Postgame Notes
Head coach Enrico Blasi became the ninth coach in CCHA history to win 200 career conference games with the 3-0 victory over Notre Dame. His all-time record in the league is now 200-122-39.
Miami scored first for the 21st time in 33 games this year when freshman forward Blake Coleman scored just 2:08 into the game. The RedHawks are now 15-5-1 this year when scoring first.
With Coleman scoring in the first period and classmate Tyler Biggs adding an empty-netter in the third, at least one freshman has scored a goal in 21 of 33 games for Miami this season. The newcomers have accounted for 36 of Miami's 91 goals, which is good for 39.5 percent. The freshmen have also tallied 87 of the team's 242 points, good for 35.9 percent. Coleman's goal was his second career game-winning goal.
Junior forward Reilly Smith scored his 22nd goal of the year in the second period, which leads the CCHA and ranks second nationally.
Senior goaltender Connor Knapp earned his third shutout of the season and 11th of his career Friday. He is one whitewash away from tying the Miami career record of 12 shutouts, held by fellow senior Cody Reichard and David Burleigh, who played from 1999-2003.
Knapp has recorded nine wins in his last 12 starts. He has allowed one goal or fewer in nine of the 17 games he's played in this year and eight of his last 10 games. He also moved into sole possession of fourth on Miami's all-time career wins list with 41. Knapp now ranks second nationally in goals-against average (1.69) and is tied for fourth in the nation in save percentage (.931).
With the shutout Friday, Miami now has five on the year, which leads the CCHA.
Biggs completed his first career multi-point game with his third-period goal and assist on Smith's goal in the second frame. His goal was Miami's second empty-netter this year.
The RedHawks are now 7-3-0 when being outshot this year after Notre Dame registered 31 on goal to Miami's 16. The `Hawks are also 4-0-0 when recording 19 or fewer shots on goal this season.
The Red and White moved to 14-1-0 when leading after two periods this year as Miami held a 2-0 lead after two periods. The RedHawks are now 10-9-1 against ranked opponents with Friday's win as well as the Irish are No. 13 in the country.
Miami won its third straight game Friday to tie a season-long winning streak. It is the team's third three-game winning streak of the season.
The RedHawks are now 37-16-10 all-time against Notre Dame, including 9-1-2 in its last 12 meetings. Miami is also now 9-1-1 vs. UND in Oxford in the last 11 meetings.
