AKRON, Ohio--Despite entering halftime tied at 33-33 against the top team in the Mid-American Conference, the Miami University men's basketball team (8-16, 4-8 MAC) fell to the Akron Zips (19-7, 11-1 MAC) Wednesday night in Akron, 74-59.
Freshman guard Brian Sullivan led all scorers with 19 points, knocking down five 3-pointers all coming in the first half. With his five triples, he cracked Miami's single-season top 10 chart for 3-point field goals, jumping to sixth with 66 this season.
Sophomore forward Jon Harris added 14 points for the RedHawks. Senior forward Julian Mavunga and sophomore guard Quinten Rollins added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Mavunga and Harris each grabbed six rebounds to lead the RedHawks.
On top of his 19 points, Sullivan played all 40 minutes, which ties his career-high. Mavunga notched six assists, while Rollins added five.
Miami did not score until nearly three minutes into the game when Sullivan nailed a 3-pointer to tie it up, 3-3. Akron went on a roll and took a seven-point lead, 17-10, at the 11:58 mark. The Zips' scoring run capped off by consecutive buckets from Demetrius Treadwell. Sullivan answered with back-to-back treys to pull the RedHawks within one, but the Zips pulled away again to take a 24-18 lead.
The momentum swung towards Miami thanks to a 10-0 run that gave the team a 28-24 lead. Sullivan, Harris and Rollins each knocked down baskets to help put the RedHawks in the lead with 5:19 to go in the first half. Akron answered back with a layup from Brett McClanahan to cut its deficit in half, and neither team held a lead greater than two for the rest of the half. Miami entered halftime against the Zips tied at 33-33.
Sullivan's 17 first-half points led all scorers with the next highest total coming from Akron's Chauncey Gilliam, who scored 10.
The beginning of the second half was all Akron, with the Zips opening play after halftime on a 13-2 scoring run that led to a 46-35 advantage at the 15:26 mark. Miami fought back to within six after a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Josh Sewell and a layup from Harris.
The six-point deficit Miami faced at that moment was the closest it came to Akron for the remainder of the game, as the Zips finished out the night on a 28-19 run that brought the final score to 74-59.
Gilliam led the Zips with 14 points, while Treadwell followed with 13 and a game-high eight boards.
Miami returns home on Sunday to take on Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee State in the Sears BracketBuster. The game tips off at 3 p.m. at Millett Hall.
