An arctic chill hit Oxford this week, but another the transition from winter to spring continues for Miami Athletics. Talk of postseason positions continues as hockey and the basketball teams countdown their final handful of regular season games. Plus softball hit the field for its first intercollegiate competition since the unofficial fall schedule.
ICE HOCKEY
Last Week: No. 20 Miami (17-13-2, 11-11-2-1 CCHA)stepped out of conference play for the final time in 2011-12 by sweeping Alabama-Huntsville 3-1 and 4-1 at Steve Cady Arena. The RedHawks also got some favorable results within the CCHA to keep tracking toward one of the top seeds for league tournament. Miami took control Friday's game early in the second period, as it tallied two unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie. Connor Knapp saved 11 of the season-low 12 shots he faced, while Tyler Biggs, Bryon Paulazzo and Reilly Smith each found the net. (RECAP) On Saturday, the RedHawks rallied from a 1-0 deficit early in the second with four unanswered goals for the victory. Alex Wideman and Matt Tomassoni scored 14 seconds apart to put Miami ahead, then Bryon Paulazzo and Alden Hirschfeld added insurance with third-period goals 49 ticks apart. Cody Reichard had 14 saves before giving way to senior Ben Saksa with with 3:27 left in the game. (RECAP) Hockey had a busy weekend outside of competition, taking part in Skate with the 'Hawks on Saturday and the Therapeutic Disabilities Skate on Sunday (PHOTO GALLERY) Don't forget to participate in two separate jersey auctions currently being held (RELEASE) This Week: Miami makes it final push for playoff position with a home series against ninth-ranked Notre Dame. Start times are 7:35 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (8-15, 4-7) wrapped up inter-divisional play in the MAC on Saturday with one of its best efforts of the season, a 69-50 rout of Central Michigan. Jon Harris tallied a career-high 17 points, while Adam Thomas posted new career bests with nine points and seven rebounds. Will Sullivan also scored a career-high in points with eight. (RECAP) Earlier in the week, however, the RedHawks suffered a 62-59 upset at the hands of Northern Illinois. Four RedHawks scored in double figures, including a then-career-high 15 points from Harris, who sunk five three-pointers. Julian Mavunga had 15 points, while Quinten Rollins added 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Drew McGhee was the other RedHawk to score in double figures with 11 points. (RECAP) This Week: Miami returns to East Division play with a Wednesday night contest at league-leader Akron. The team then hosts a BracketBuster game with Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Millett Hall.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Last Week: Miami (17-7, 7-4) wrapped up its play against the West Division with just one game during the week, falling in an upset, 70-58 to Northern Illinois. OXFORD, Ohio - It was a day where the ball just would not fall in the basket, as the Miami University women's basketball team fell to Northern Illinois, 70-58, on Saturday. It was one of those days when the RedHawks couldn't buy a basket -- as they shot just 31.6 percent -- while the Huskies lit up Millett Hall at a 54.3 percent pace. Courtney Osborn led the RedHawks with 21 points, while Maggie Boyer finished with 17.(RECAP) This Week: Miami faces its toughest road swing of the league season this week with games Wednesday and Saturday. The RedHawks travel to Kent State on Wednesday, then leave again on Friday for a Saturday matchup at Buffalo.
SYNCHRONIZED SKATING
Last Week: The collegiate synchronized skating team remained undefeated this season, winning the Tri-State Championship on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks amassed a score of 83.53 at the event, besting their nearest competitors by a 5.69 margin with their program to music by Beyonce. (RECAP) This Week: All three teams are off until the U.S. National Championships March 1-3. However, the RedHawks host a Nationals Send-Off Exhibition at Steve Cady Arena at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. All three teams will perform their competitive programs for the Miami and Oxford communities one last time before heading to the national championships. The event is free and open to the public.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: In its final big test before the Mid-American Conference Championships in two weeks, the RedHawks performed well, winning two races while also earning three runner-up finishes at the Akron Invitational. Rachael Clay continued her strong season, winning the 400m dash in a personal-best time of 54.90, the second-best time in school history. In the 3000m run, Anna Lamb was the runner-up in a personal-best 9:59.83, while Alexandra Roberts just missed topping her school record in the shot put as she was the runner-up with a season-best heave of 49-11.25/15.22m, the second-best throw in school history. (RECAP) This Week: Miami participates in the Ball State Quadrangular on Friday before focusing on the MAC Indoor Championship the following week.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Last Week: In preparation for the 2012 outdoor season, Miami traveled to the Hoosier Hills Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, for the first of its two NCAA-allowable indoor meets. The RedHawks won two events while setting several personal bests in field events. Jahquil Hargrove started his season strong by winning the 400m dash in an indoor personal-best 49.00. Sophomore Kevin Brown was also victorious, taking the 600m run in a personal-best 1:20.29, winning by nearly a full second. John Cantwell finished third in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 23-2.5/7.07m and sixth in the triple jump. In the shot put, Rob Stein grabbed third place with a personal-best and indoor school-record toss of 58-2/17.73m. (RECAP) This Week: Miami competes in its second and final indoor meet of the season next Friday, Feb. 17 at the OSU Tune-Up in Columbus, Ohio. The RedHawks open outdoor competition March 23-24 at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold Invitational.
SOFTBALL
Last Week: The 2012 Miami softball season got underway this weekend as the RedHawks won three of four at the Kennesaw State Classic. Miami swept Saturday's action, 3-2 over Southern Illinois and 7-3 over Austin Peay, then defeated Mercer 11-4 on Sunday before falling 2-0 to the hosts. At the conclusion of the tournament, Jessica Simpson and Allie Larrabee were each named to the All-Tournament Team. (SATURDAY RECAP) (SUNDAY RECAP) This Week: Miami takes the weekend off before returning to action Feb. 24 at the Blues City Classic, hosted by Memphis.
TENNIS
Last Week: Miami (2-5) found itself in a pair of battles over the weekend, but came up short on each occasion. The RedHawks lost 4-3 to Furman in a match played in Louisville, Ky., on Friday, then fell 5-2 at Indiana on Saturday. Against the Paladins, Miami dropped the doubles point by a 2-1 score before the teams split the singles play. Riekie Honiball, Alix Thurman and Katherine Castro grabbed victories. (RECAP) The next day, Stephanie Danesis and Nimisha Mohan earned points for the RedHawks, although the No. 6 match went to a third set. (RECAP) This Week: Miami continues its string of seven straight on the road, heading to Lincoln, Neb., to face Washington State on Saturday and the host Huskers on Sunday.
There will be two more Miami teams to report on next week. The golf team beings its spring schedule today at the MAC Match Play Challenge in Dade City, Fla., while baseball heads to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman in a three-game set starting Friday.
