Miami Hockey Postgame Notes
Senior goaltender Cody Reichard made 14 saves on 15 shots Saturday to improve his record to 8-7-2 on the season on a night he was honored for his volunteer work off the ice with Swoop's Stoop, a charity he started at the beginning of the 2010-11 season. The entire team wore commemorative Swoop's Stoop jerseys during the game and they will be auctioned off on www.MURedHawks.com starting Sunday. The team also wore pink laces on their skates as part of "Box-Out Cancer" weekend.
The `Hawks were able to complete the weekend sweep of the Chargers with the 4-1 win Saturday, getting their second home sweep of the season with the other coming Jan. 20-21 vs. Western Michigan (3-1, 4-0). It was the team's fourth overall sweep of the season, also sweeping Alaska and Michigan State on the road.
Freshman forward Alex Wideman's goal at 16:33 of the second period marked the 20th time in 32 games this year at least one freshman has scored a goal for Miami. Miami's freshmen have accounted for 34 of Miami's 88 goals this year, good for 38.6 percent.
Senior third-string goaltender Ben Saksa made the second appearance of his career Saturday when he relieved Cody Reichard for the final 3:27 of the game. His only other appearance was on Oct. 23, 2010 in a 9-1 win over Northern Michigan. Saksa recorded the first save of his career late in the third period as the Chargers raced up ice 3-on-2 in transition.
Miami improved to 8-1-0 all-time against the Chargers with the win, first playing in 1988-89. Miami lost the first meeting before winning the last eight matchups. The RedHawks are now 6-0-0 when playing against UAH at home.
The RedHawks won their third game in 12 tries this season when their opponent scores first, as UAH scored early in the second period to break a scoreless game.
Miami improved to 6-2-0 in non-conference games this season, with its other wins coming against Bemidji State, Colgate, Providence and then-No. 9/10 Denver, as well as UAH Friday night. The games against the Chargers were Miami's final non-conference games of the regular season.
The RedHawks recorded a season high for shots on goal with 48 Friday, topping their previous high of 46 on Jan. 14, 2012 at Lake Superior State.
A total of 11 RedHawks tallied points Saturday night (out of 18 skaters), but none had more than one point.
Sophomore forward Bryon Paulazzo scored at 8:49 of the third period to light the lamp in back-to-back games for the first time this season after scoring in Friday's win as well. He recorded goals in three consecutive games to close out the 2010-11 season, scoring once in each game against Notre Dame (CCHA Semifinals, 3/18/11), Western Michigan (CCHA Finals, 3/19/11) and New Hampshire (NCAA First Round, 3/26/11). Paulazzo has also now scored in three of the RedHawks' past five games.
