Miami Hockey Postgame Notes
Miami scored first for the 20th time this season on freshman forward Tyler Biggs' power play goal in the first period. The RedHawks improved to 14-5-1 when scoring first.
Freshman forward Austin Czarnik recorded the seventh multi-point game of his career, as he notched two assists on the night. It was his fourth career multi-assist game.
With the win Friday, senior goaltender Connor Knapp moved into a tie for fourth on Miami's all-time wins list with his 40th career victory. He stopped 11 of 12 shots on the night to tie Richard Shulmistra (1990-94) for fourth. Classmate Cody Reichard sits in third on the list with 51 career wins.
Knapp lowered his season goals-against average to 1.81, which ranks fourth nationally and first in the CCHA. He has allowed a goal or less eight times this season, including seven of his last nine games.
Miami improved to 7-1-0 all-time against the Chargers, first playing in 1988-89. Miami lost the first meeting before winning the next seven matchups. The teams last met in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament, which Miami won, 2-1. The RedHawks are now 5-0 when playing against UAH at home.
Miami improved to 5-2 in non-conference games this season, with its other wins coming against Bemidji State, Colgate, Providence and then-No. 9/10 Denver.
The RedHawks allowed a season low for shots as they limited the Chargers to 12 shots on goal. The previous low was 13 shots on goal by Northern Michigan Jan. 27.
Senior forward Reilly Smith scored his 21st goal of the season in the second period as he continues to lead the CCHA and moved into a tie for second in the nation in goals scored.
Freshman forward Tyler Biggs' goal in the first period marked the 19th time in 31 games this year at least one freshman has scored a goal for Miami. Miami's freshmen have accounted for 33 of Miami's 84 goals this year, or 39.3 percent.
Saturday is Skate with the `Hawks night after the game. Miami will also wear special Swoop's Stoop jerseys, which will be auctioned off on MURedHawks.com starting Sunday. Senior goalie Cody Reichard will be recognized prior to the game for his work with Swoop's Stoop.
