Westrick Paces Miami in Florida Meet

Boca Raton, Florida - Miami's Bekka Westrick (Fairfield) won both the 50- and the 100-meter freestyle events in a three-team, non-scoring women's swimming meet held Wednesday (Jan. 4) in Boca Raton's Saint Andrews Pool.
The meet concluded an intense week of training for Miami, James Madison and Keene State down in southern Florida.
In a rare long-course meet, Westrick streaked to victory in the 50 free with a time of 27.78, six-tenths of a second in from of her closest competitor. The Miami junior's time of 1:08.21 in the 100 free was 46/100ths of a second faster than runner-up and teammate Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN).
Other notable individual performances included two second-place efforts by senior Chelsey Bruington (Mission Viejo, CA) and junior Stacie Clagg (Canton), and a runner-up finish by freshman Katie Bootsma (Eden Prairie, MN). Bruington touched the wall in times of 1:02.52 in the 100 free and 2:13.70 in the 200 free. Clagg sparkled in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.94) and the 200 individual medley (2:32.36). Bootsma took second in the 100 backstroke (1:13.18).
Miami's women and men next compete at home against Cincinnati on Jan. 13 at 5 p.m. Admission is free at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
