OXFORD, Ohio -- In one of its best efforts of the season so far, Miami University's men's swimming and diving team defeated arch-rival Cincinnati Friday evening at the Nixon Aquatic Center, 181-118.
Coach Pete Lindsay's squad evened its record at 4-4, thanks to a double win by senior diver James Beres, single victories by Alex Reinhardt, Brendan Melling, Mike Cavanaugh, Joe Baumgartner, Dan Nemeth, Chris Gunnels and Logan Emery, plus a 200 freestyle triumph by the foursome of Baumgarter, Sam Childs, Sam Reeder and Nemeth.
Beres took first place in both the one-meter (378.08 pts) and the three-meter (395.85) diving events. Teammates Mike Grainger and Chris Hoppler finished among the top three in both events.
Reinhardt swam the 1000 freestyle in a season-best time of 9:43.21. Miami's Ryan Neff took third in that event.
Melling got his victory in the 200 freestyle, finishing 15/100ths of a second ahead of a UC swimmer with a time of 1:43.98.
Cavanaugh took the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:53.96, touching the wall more than three seconds ahead of teammate Sean Sullivan.
Baumgartner and fellow freshman Chris Breger placed one-two in the 50 free, with respective times of 21.19 and 21.86.
Nemeth edged out Baumgartner in the 100 free, 46.80 to 46.91, as the two RedHawks collected 13 of the 19 available points.
