Miami Men Fall at Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Senior Brendan Melling (Solon) scored 17 individual points with one first-place finish and two seconds, but Miami's men's swimming and diving team was defeated by host Cleveland State (9-4) Friday afternoon, 179-120.
Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks (4-5) got top individual placings from Melling plus divers JIM BERES (Columbus) on the three-meter board and Mike Grainger (Cincinnati) in the one-meter event.
Melling placed first in the 1000 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 9:41.68. Beres, Miami's reigning Male Athlete of the Week, scored 368.85 points, out-distancing teammate Grainger by nearly 20 points. Grainger had a score of 295.88, bettering CSU's Josh Gonzalez by 14 points.
Miami got runner-up finishes from:
*CHRIS GUNNELS (Chapel Hill, NC) in the 100 backstroke (51.59) and the 200 back (1:53.01)
*IAN JOYCE (Hampden, MA) in the 200 free (1:44.80)
*JONATHAN PROFITT (Wyoming) in the 100 breaststroke (59.90)
*MICHAEL CAVANAUGH (Bowling Green) in the 200 butterfly (1:55.35)
*Gunnels, Chris Breger (Brookfield, WI), Profitt and Joe Baumgartner (St. Louis, MO) in the 200 medley relay (1:35.21)
*Gunnels, Sam Childs (Palatine, IL), Cavanaugh and Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO) in the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.16)
The RedHawks travel to New York on Saturday, taking on the host Buffalo Bulls in a 2 p.m. meet.
