Captains' Corner is a weekly update from a captain or leader of one of the RedHawks' 19 teams that will run every other Thursday throughout the academic year. Today's update is from men's basketball's Julian Mavunga. Julian is a senior from Indianapolis, Ind. who prepped at Brownsburg High School. He is a sports studies major with a minor in coaching. Check back on Jan. 26 for the next edition of Captains' Corner with the women's indoor track and field team.
As we are now 14 games into the season, we're closing in on the halfway point. The season has certainly had its ups and downs. We have competed at a high level in most games, but the sad part right now is we don't have a whole lot to show for it.
We obviously experienced some setbacks, losing perhaps three of our top five or six players. However, people have stepped up into roles and done a good job of improving every single day. Out of our 10 losses, eight have come by single digits. With that said, I firmly believe all hope is not lost!
Despite our last two losses to open conference play, I think that our team still has a great chance to surprise some people. Improvement has been steady and competition at practice has been fierce.
The emergence of Brian Sullivan has given us a good offensive boost. Our other point guard, Quinten Rollins, is our best defender and as of late has shown that he too can be an offensive threat. Drew McGhee has shown that he can battle on the interior with the best of them. He's shooting 66 percent from the field on the year and is becoming a great inside presence for us. Along with Drew, Vince Legarza and Adam Thomas have been able to come into games and give us positive minutes.
Other perimeter guys like Jon Harris and Josh Sewell have improved over the course of the season, and they have been able to provide us a spark on offense and defense.
Everyone has played a part in this season for the Miami RedHawks. Being 4-10 is frustrating, but with more than half the season left we are look forward to making a turnaround and competing hard in the league.
We have another challenge this weekend as we host Buffalo at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14. As we try to continue to improve as a team, we hope you'll be there cheering us on and look forward to seeing you at Millett Hall throughout the remainder season.
Love and Honor,
Julian Mavunga
