KENT, Ohio--Miami University's men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought battle at Kent State University on Wednesday evening, falling to the Golden Flashes (11-4; 1-1 Mid-American Conference), 71-67.

The RedHawks' (4-10; 0-2 MAC) sophomore center Drew McGhee poured in a career-high 16 points, doubling his previous career-best of eight at Xavier earlier this year, going 8-for-10 from the field. Senior forward Julian Mavunga chipped in 14 points, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots, while sophomore forward Jon Harris tallied 12 points and sophomore guard Quinten Rollins added 10 points

Miami used an 11-2 run early in the first half to build a nine-point lead with 12:54 to play, 22-13. Harris sunk a pair of 3-pointers, while McGhee added two field goals during the RedHawk rally. The Golden Flashes closed within five with 10:14 remaining, 24-19, but a 6-0 RedHawk flurry--powered by five points from Rollins--extended the Miami lead to 11 points with 6:06 remaining, 30-19.

A McGhee layup with 2:31 left in the opening half pushed the RedHawk lead to 12 points, 37-35. The Golden Flashes, however, staged an 8-0 surge over the remainder of the half to close the gap to four points heading into halftime, 37-33.

Kent State took its first lead since the 15:39 mark of the first half off a Kris Brewer 3-pointer, 42-41, with 17:53 remaining. Miami eventually pulled out to a nine-point lead off a pair of freshman guard Brian Sullivan free throws with 11:50 remaining, 57-48.

The Golden Flashes came back with a 10-0 run, taking a 58-57 lead with 7:27 to play. Three-point plays by Rollins and Mavunga along with a layup by sophomore guard Josh Sewell put Miami back on top by seven points with 5:56 left, 65-58. Kent State, however, outscored Miami 13-2 over the remaining minutes to pull out the 71-67 win.

Kent State's Justin Greene led all players with 23 points, while Randal Holt had 16 points and Carlton Guyton added 10 points.

Miami returns home to host Buffalo at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14. The game will be televised on STO.
