OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team fell to No. 11 Michigan, 5-1, in non-conference action Saturday. The RedHawks fall to 2-8 overall, while the Wolverines improve to 7-3.
Michigan was able to take a 2-0 lead three minutes into the game. The Wolverines controlled play early, but in the 17th minute Miami drove it into their side of the field and forced a penalty corner. After passing it around for a bit, Emily Gruesser would find Sid Marcum right in front of the goal. Her one-time shot beat the goalkeeper to her right to cut the RedHawk deficit to 2-1.
That would be as close as Miami would get, as the Wolverines would score two more to take a 4-1 lead into the half. Michigan would continue on the offensive attack in the second half, but was only able to score one more time as Sarah Mueller made seven saves during the period for the RedHawks.
For the game, the Wolverines outshot Miami, 25-2, and had a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners. Mueller finished the day with 10 saves.
The RedHawks return to Mid-American Conference action Sunday when they host Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
