OXFORD, Ohio-- Despite a strong showing during the early portion of play, the Miami University field hockey team lost, 4-0, to Northwestern on Sunday in the team's home opener. The RedHawks record falls to 0-2, while the Wildcats improve to 2-0 for the season.
Miami came out strong in the first half, dominating the offensive play while keeping the Northwestern shots to a minimum. The RedHawks were able to get off five shots before Chelsea Armstrong scored the first goal for Northwestern in the 23rd minute of the first half. Coming into the second half, the two teams looked evenly matched, but Chelsea Armstrong scored again in the 46th minute followed by goals from Regan Mooney and Nikki Parsley.
Miami was outshot by the Wildcats, 24-8, on the day. Sarah Mueller proved herself strong in goal yet again, making seven saves. Brittany Branco stepped up again in support of the defensive cause, making her second defensive save of the year.
The RedHawks return to action next Friday when they travel out to the East Coast to take on Monmouth. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
