Tennis Rolls Past Ball State

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami swept all nine matches against Ball State Saturday, posting a 7-0 women's tennis victory over the Cardinals at Riverside Racquet Club. The win was the 28th straight against league opponents and sets up a showdown with undefeated Akron next week for the regular-season title.

Miami (15-5, 6-0) took the doubles point with an 8-1 win by Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf at No. 1. Ranked 79th in the country, they improved to 15-5 overall this season. Riekie Honiball and Jessica Parr won their 10th straight match, 8-6 at No. 2 to clinch the point before Anastasia Dracheva and Cara Wald completed the sweep, 8-6 at No. 3.

The RedHawks surrendered only 13 games in the six singles matches. Danesis cruised 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 while Mohan earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Honiball was able to clinch the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win, one of the fastest she has played all year. Dracheva shutout her opponent, 6-0, 6-0 in the top flight, while No. 3 Martzolf earned a 6-2, 6-1 decision.

Wald completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.

Ball State falls to 7-13, 1-5 with the loss.

The RedHawks, winners of 23 straight regular-season conference matches, host the 74th-ranked Zips Friday in a matchup of teams yet to taste defeat in conference play. With 6-0 marks, the winner will clinch the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament and need only to win the next day to win the regular-season title outright. The match begins at 1 p.m. at the Hepburn Courts on Miami's campus.
