WALNUT, Calif. and CINCINNATI - A pair of Miami University distance runners put in strong efforts at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College, Friday while two RedHawks also competed on the first day of the All-Ohio Championships, hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
Senior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) clocked a season-best 2:10.09 in the 800m run as she took fifth out of 13 in her heat and was 27th out of 96 overall in the race. She ran the first 400m in 1:06 but picked it up in the back half, finishing in 1:04 passing several runners despite getting trapped in a crowd for the first 200m of the race.
Freshman Kate Carter (Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished second in her heat at the Mt. SAC Relays in the 1500m in a personal-best 4:37.76, shaving 10 seconds off her previous best. Her time also qualifies her for the U.S. Junior Nationals in the event. She finished 81st out of 126 overall competitors who ran the 1500m.
Miami's only point scorer on day one of the All-Ohio Championships was junior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.), who took seventh to earn two points with a heave of 51.24m/168-1 in the hammer throw. Freshman Sarah Tirrell (North Canton, Ohio) was the only other RedHawk to compete on day one in Cincinnati, as she took second in the Division I 5000m run in 18:57.14 and was third among all 10 runners in the 5K.
Ashland leads the women's meet at the All-Ohio Championships with 61 points followed by Dayton with 48 points. The RedHawks are in 12th while the host Bearcats tallied just one point and sit in 13th after one day.
The final Miami runner at the Mt. SAC Relays is junior Rachel Patterson (Rochester, Mich.), who runs the 5K at 1:08 a.m. ET (10:08 p.m. local) while the rest of the RedHawks wrap up action at the All-Ohio Championships beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday with the remainder of the heptathlon, though no `Hawks are competing in it, while the long jump is at 11 a.m. The 5K fast section is the first track event at 1 p.m. while the meet concludes at 5:15 p.m. with the 4x400m relay.
