OXFORD, Ohio - Hosting the first of two home meets this year, the Miami University women's track and field team saw a bit of everything Saturday at the Miami Invitational at George Rider track as two RedHawks won events, including one breaking a school record, while weather delayed the meet for several hours. Over 900 athletes from 46 teams (men and women) participated in the meet, the largest field ever at the Miami Invitational.
After two sections of the 5000m run were completed to start the meet in the morning, rain started to fall and lightning was spotted in the area, forcing a nearly four-hour delay. The meet resumed in the afternoon and finished in darkness as the final two events (the women's 3K and section II of the men's 5K) were run after the sun had set because of the delay.
Miami totaled 111 points to win the meet over local rival Cincinnati, who finished with 105 points. Mid-American Conference foes claimed spots three through five, as Western Michigan was third (85), Eastern Michigan fourth (67) and Kent State fifth (60). Fellow local rival Dayton placed sixth.
Junior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) won the shot put with a school-record throw of 15.20m/49-10.5, beating Lauren Collins' 2003 record by 10 inches. Roberts also took fourth in the discus with a personal-best toss of 47.12m/154-7, which ranks her fourth in school history.
The other RedHawk winner was freshman Tori Paterra (Elizabeth, Pa.) in the javelin with a heave of 48.61m/159-6, which is the second-best throw in the modern era (since 1999) at Miami. The school record-holder in the event, Paterra won the event for the third straight meet, winning by nearly 19 feet.
Miami captured two of the top three spots in the long jump as redshirt freshman Ashley Zaper (Whitehouse, Ohio) was second with a personal-best leap of 5.57m/18-3.25 while senior Magda Wikar (Winnetka, Ill.) took third with the same height but lost the jumpoff. In the triple jump, senior Hope Alexander (Wilmington, Del.) placed fourth with a season-best jump of 11.58m/38-0.
In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) earned second with a season-best clocking of 1:01.96. Sophomore Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished third in the 100m hurdles in a season-best 14.25 while freshman Xerina Hughey (Galloway, Ohio) was seventh in a personal-best 14.53.
Junior Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.) was the runner-up in the 200m dash in a personal-best 24.54, ranking her sixth all-time at Miami, while also claiming third in the 100m dash in 11.96 ticks. Cincinnati's Natasha Burse won both events.
In the 1500m, junior Rachel Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) crossed in third in a personal-best 4:27.56, which is the fourth-best time in school history, while senior Katie Lenahan (Cincinnati, Ohio) was seventh in a personal-best 4:30.81, ranking her eighth all-time at Miami. Freshman Kate Carter (Ann Arbor, Mich.) placed fifth in the 800m in a personal-best 2:14.67.
Freshman Erica Mudd (Cincinnati, Ohio) claimed runner-up honors in the high jump with a clearance of 1.63m/5-4.25, tying a personal best. On Friday, junior Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) placed fifth in the hammer throw, the day's lone event, with a personal-best throw of 55.25m/181-3, which ranks her second all-time among RedHawks.
Scannell, Graves, Baggett and freshman Ariel Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined to place fourth in the 4x100m relay in 47.07. The 4x400m relay was not run due to darkness.
The RedHawks will split its squad for the second time this year next weekend with most of the team heading to the All-Ohio Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio April 15-16 while select `Hawks will travel to Walnut, Calif. for the Mt. SAC Relays April 14-16.
