WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Miami rallied to tie the game in the eighth, but Yale scored the game-winner in top of the ninth to earn a 3-2 win over the RedHawks Monday afternoon at Chain O'Lakes Stadium.
Miami fell behind 2-0, allowing singles runs in the fifth and seventh. The runs spoiled the collegiate debut of freshman starter Seth Varner, who allowed just three hits and a walk in six innings. The second run was unearned after an errant throw by Adam Weisenburger on a steal attempt.
Miami clawed back into the game, cutting the deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Weisenburger and Kaup both singled, then wound up at second and third after the right fielder booted Kaup's hit. An error on Brad Gschwind's grounder to the shortstop plated run, but Kaup caused a distraction on the play. The RedHawks could have had the tying run score one batter later, but pinch runner Jordan Shusteric was doubled off first base on a Ryan Curl flyout to center.
The RedHawks manufactured the tying run in the eighth when Ryan Brenner had a leadoff walk and stole second. Despite being injured on the play, he stayed in and took third when on Jon Edgington's sacrifice. After Bryce Redeker was hit by a pitch and a second out recorded, Miami executed a perfect double steal to make the score 2-2.
But in the ninth, the Bulldogs (1-2) went back ahead. A one out single to right was bobbled by Pat Glass, who replaced Brenner, putting a runner at second. The next batter singled for the game-winner, but Miami wasn't done fighting.
Weisenburger walked to start the frame and was sacrificed to second. Pinchhitter Marcus Makuch singled to center, but Cale Hansen threw a perfect strike to the plate for the second out and ended the RedHawks chances.
Miami has tomorrow off before taking on Michigan State on Wednesday.
