Junior forward and newly named captain Reilly Smith, the reigning CCHA Player of the Month, tallied a goal in the third period to give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. It was Smith's team-leading 12th goal of the year as he is now tied for the CCHA lead in goals.
Junior Curtis McKenzie scored Miami's first goal in the second period, which was the first goal of the game. Miami has now scored first in 13 of its 20 games but fell to 8-4-1 in those contests.
Saturday's overtime game was the RedHawks' fifth of the year. Miami fell to 0-3-2 in overtime contests this season, with the other losses also coming on 3-2 decisions.
Of Miami's 20 games this year, 17 have been decided by two goals or less. The Red and White are now 5-4 in one-goal games after Saturday's contest and 2-4 in two-goal games as well as two ties.
Miami is now 64-60-12 in the all-time series against Ohio State and 40-23-4 against the Buckeyes in Oxford. The `Hawks have played OSU more than any other team in program history.
Freshman forward Jimmy Mullin tallied three points on the weekend, scoring a goal and an assist on Friday and adding another assist on Reilly Smith's power play goal on Saturday. The three-point weekend is a career-best for Mullin.
Senior goalie Cody Reichard made a career-high 35 saves in net Saturday. His previous career best was 33 saves, which he achieved twice -- Feb. 5, 2010 vs. Lake Superior and Feb. 26, 2010 vs. Ohio State.
