OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's men's swimming and diving squad faced its toughest test of the young season Friday, falling to 11th-ranked Ohio State, 149-122, at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Coach Pete Lindsay's RedHawks (2-3) got first-place finishes from senior diver JIMMY BERES (Columbus) in both the one- and three-meter events, accounting for 18 of his team's points. The defending Mid-American Conference champion posted a 383.40 in the three-meter competition and 350.77 in the one-meter event.
The powerful Buckeyes, now 5-0 in dual meets, recorded the fastest times in all 12 of the swimming events.
Besides Beres, top placers for Miami included: Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN) who finished second in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 59.17; Dan Nemeth (Highland Heights) who was runner-up in the 50 freestyle (21.08); freshman Joe Baumgartner (St. Louis, MO), who was third in the 100 free (46.75); and Mike Grainger (Cincinnati), who was the runner-up in the one-meter diving event.
"We're making progress," said Lindsey. "Sam Crockett, Chris Gunnels, Dan Nemeth, Anderson Whipp and others all raced well tonight. I also liked the aggressiveness we showed in the 200 free relay."
The RedHawk men and women host a coed meet tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 12) against Kenyon College at 2 p.m. Admission to the meet at Miami's Recreation Center is free.
