Miami Swimmers Top Evansville

Carbondale, Illinois -- Individual victories by divers JIM BERES (Columbus) and Chris Hoppler (Germantown, MD) helped lead Miami past Evansville, 179-57, in a season-opening double-dual meet at Carbondale, Illinois.
SIU defeated Miami in the other portion of the meet, 162-81.
Beres, a senior, won the one-meter competition, posting a winning score of 315.20, a full four points better than SIU's Justin Ruszkowski. Miami's Hoppler and MICHAEL GRAINGER (Cincinnati) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Hoppler defeated Ruszkowski in the three-meter event with an impressive score of 345.75, while Beres and Grainger finished third and fourth.
Three other members of Coach Pete Lindsay's squad notched runner-up finishes, including senior Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) in the 200 freestyle, sophomore Michael Cavanaugh (Bowling Green) in the 200 butterfly, Gunnels in the 200 backstroke, and junior Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO) in the 500 free.
Finishing third in their respective events were freshman Logan Emery (Chesterfield, MO) in the 200 individual medley, and senior Brendan Melling (Solon) in the 500 free and the 200 breaststroke.
Miami's 400 freestyle relay team of Gunnels, sophomore Dan Nemeth (Highland Heights), freshman ANDY KILKENNY (Manchester, MO) and freshman Joe Baumgartner (St. Louis, MO) placed second with a time of 3:10.04 behind SIU.
On Saturday, Oct. 22, Miami (1-1) hosts Xavier in a dual meet at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
