Miami Swimmers Sweep Xavier

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami's men's and women's swimming teams cruised past Xavier in a coed meet at the Nixon Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. Head coach Pete Lindsay's men defeated the Musketeers 156-106 to move to 2-1 on the season while women's head coach Dave Jennings' team won by a 169-85 margin to even its season record at 1-1.
Junior Dan Nemeth and senior Chris Gunnels led the men with one relay and two individual wins apiece. Nemeth sprinted his way to a first place finish in the 50 and 100 freestyles, turning in times of 21.26 and 47.07, respectively, and helped the 200 freestyle relay team cap off the meet with a win. Gunnels anchored the 200 free relay and won the 100 and 200 backstrokes, touching the wall in 52.42 and 1:53.96, respectively.
The Miami men also got wins from junior Alex Reinhardt in the 500 freestyle (4:44:04), sophomores Sean Minderlein and Mike Cavanaugh in the 1000 free (9:49.99) and 200 butterfly (1:54.89), respectively, and freshman Patrick Greitzer in the 100 breaststroke (59.21). Junior Anderson Whipp and freshman Joe Baumgartner were the other two members of the first-place 200 free relay team that turned in a time of 1:24.79.
Senior Chelsey Bruington, juniors Bekka Westrick and Maegan O'Connor and sophomore Michaela Scott led the women with two wins each. Bruington showed off her versatility, finishing first in the 50 and 500 freestyles with times of 24.39 and 5:09.08. Westrick and O'Connor helped the 400 medley relay team to a first-place finish in the first event of the meet before Westrick won the 200 freestyle (1:54.01) and O'Connor took first in the 100 backstroke (58.54). Scott's wins, both in individual events, came in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes in times of 1:06.25 and 2:24.50, respectively.
Junior Maddie Kete and freshmen Amy Trace, Courtney Collett and Katie Bootsma each also recorded a win for the RedHawks. For the three freshmen, it was their first win of their Miami careers. Kete touched first in the 100 freestyle (52.41) while Trace picked up her win in the 1000 free (10:47.27), Collett won the 200 butterfly (2:08.69) and Bootsma finished first in the 200 backstroke (2:07.68).
