Final Stats
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Two teams battled hard for a total of two hours and 30 minutes Thursday evening, but in the end the Miami University volleyball team fell in a heartbreaking, 2-3 (28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25, 9-15), defeat to Bowling Green. Amy Raseman had 15 kills, one of five different RedHawks with double digit kills. Lisa Treadway had a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs for Miami, which falls to 12-7 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons improve to 16-2 overall and 3-2 in the MAC.
Tied at five in the first set, kills from Treadway, Raseman and Christina Menche were part of a 5-1 run that put the RedHawks in front, 10-6. Cassie Farrell would score two kills, but Bowling Green would eventually fight back to tie the score at 15. Tied at 20, Raseman put down a kill off a Meg Riley assist to put Miami back in front. However, BG scored three straight points to go in front, 23-21. The RedHawks did not give up as they scored three straight of their own to create set point at 24-23. The Falcons would fight off set point three times until the score was tied at 26. Menche and Treadway would follow with back-to-back kills to give Miami a 28-26 win.
Kills from Caylor, Farrell and Riley pushed the Red and White to a 4-1 lead early in set two. A 13-8 run by the Falcons would put BG in front, 14-12. Miami would answer with kills by Menche and Raseman to retie the score. Tied a 17, a 5-3 spurt by the Falcons would make it 22-20 in favor of the home team. The RedHawks did not give up as a kill from Caylor and a service ace by Madison Dodd would tie the score at 22. Bowling Green scored the next two points to create set point. Miami fought it off once after the Falcons had a setting error, but BG put down a kill on the next point to secure a 25-23 victory.
Set three did not start out well for the RedHawks as they fell behind, 3-9. Two double blocks by Treadway and Menche would spark an 8-2 run that quickly tied the score at 11. Menche would then put down a kill to give Miami its first lead of the set. Tied at 12, a 4-0 run by the Red and White would give them control. A service ace by Menche and a kill from Raseman would help Miami increase the lead to six at 20-14. The teams would trade points until it was 23-18 in favor of the RedHawks. Treadway would then give Miami a 25-18 win with back-to-back kills.
Two kills each by Caylor and Treadway helped put Miami in front 6-2 in set four. An 8-4 run by BG would tie the score at 10. The Falcons would eventually take an 18-15 advantage. Trailing 17-20, the RedHawks would score two straight points as Treadway and Caylor scored kills off Amy Kendall assists. The teams would trade points until it was 23-22 in favor of Bowling Green. Miami was never able to tie the set, as the Falcons scored the next two points to take a 25-22 win.
The two teams traded 11 side outs to begin the fifth set, which saw Bowling Green take a 6-5 lead. The difference came on the next point, when the Falcons put down a kill on their own serve to take a two-point lead. Raseman would score the next two kills for the RedHawks as the teams traded sideouts once again, but with the score 10-8 in favor of Bowling Green, a Falcon block would give BG its first three-point lead of the set. Madison Dodd would answer with a kill for Miami to make it 9-11, but Bowling Green would respond with the final four points to earn a 15-9 win and take the match three sets to two.
The RedHawks hit .300 for the match, while holding the Falcons to a .222 hitting percentage. Madison Hardy led the RedHawks with 25 digs, as the Red and White out dug Bowling Green, 75-71, for the match. Kendall led Miami with 35 assists, while Riley contributed 26. Other RedHawks with double-digit kills included Farrell with 13, Menche with 11 and Caylor with 10.
Miami continues its road trip when it heads to DeKalb Saturday to take on Northern Illinois. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. (EDT).
