Purdue Defeats Miami Women's Swimmers

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's women's swimming and diving team got a first-place finish from Nikki Craft (Bay Village), two second-place efforts from Stacie Clagg (Canton) and two runner-up performances by freshman Courtney Collett (Hilton Head Island, SC), but Big Ten power Purdue topped the RedHawks, 175-117, Friday afternoon at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
It was the 2011-12 season opener for Miami and the second meet for the Boilermakers.
Craft was the only RedHawk to claim a victory in an individual event, winning the one-meter competition with a score of 253.20. Teammates Lisa Werwinski (Canton) and CORY BANGS (Monument, CO), placed fourth and fifth, respectively, as Miami scored a total of 12 points on the one-meter board. Craft placed third in the three-meter event, while Bangs and Werwinski placed fourth and fifth.
Clagg, a junior, had the best meet of her career on Friday, placing second in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM, and third in the 100 breast. She also swam the second leg for Miami's 200 medley relay squad that placed second.
Miami true freshmen Collett, Katie Bootsma (Eden Prairie, MN) and Stephanie Pearce (Cincinnati) all were impressive in their varsity debuts. Collett placed second in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events, Bootsma finished second in the 200 backstroke and third in the 100 back, while Pearce wound up third in the 500 free and fourth in the 1000 free.
Other RedHawk top performances came from Maegan O'Connor (Fishers, IN) who was second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 fly. Senior Chelsey Bruington (Mission Viejo, CA) placed second in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 free. Senior Kelsey Mallon (Wheaton, IL) earned points with a third- place showing in the 100 fly and fifth in the 200 fly. Sophomore Michaela Scott (St. Charles, IL) placed third in the 200 breast.
The other Miamians who contributed at least one point in individual events were Molly Tyler (Birmingham, MI), Stacia Schacter (Atlanta, GA), Bekka Westrick (Fairfield). Leah Thornton (Helena, AL), Cynthia Donovan (Cincinnati), Jenny Warmolts (Upper Arlington), Lauren Wallace (Columbus), and Brittney Rohr (Dayton).
The RedHawk women and men take on Xavier Saturday (Oct. 22) in a double-dual meet. The first event begins at 2 p.m.
